This special concert will celebrate the release of two new albums on Infidels Jazz by Darren Williams & Bruce Freedman respectively.
Darren Williams is a musical performance graduate from Toronto where he studied contemporary improvisation at York University with Professor Casey Sokol. Since 1997 Williams has been active as a performer devoted to musical improvisation in all its manifestations. Concert appearances have included collaborations with John Oswald, Eugene Chadbourne, Ig Henneman, Lori Freedman, and John Abram. As a diverse instrumentalist Williams explores timbral possibilities and various extended techniques on his saxophones with a penchant for reinvention of popular musical forms.
He will be releasing his new album “Musical Idiot” through Infidels Jazz on CD / Streaming / Download on February 02, 2024, and will be performing a solo set at Tyrant on February 05.
Performing their own set, will be Bruce Freedman’s Collage.
Transposing his cut-up visual art practice over to music, saxophonist Bruce Freedman’s COLLAGE disassembles and reassembles musical elements in ways that can surprise the musicians as much as the audience. With Josh Zubot violin, Jared Burrows guitar, Karlis Silins bass, and Kenton Loewen drums, Freedman’s controlled chaos cuts from intense energy to spacious reflection.
Bruce will be releasing his new album Collage through Infidels Jazz via streaming / Download on January 26, 2024.
The New Thing is a monthly series dedicated to free jazz and improvised music. It’s co-presented by Infidels Jazz & NOW Society, and takes place at Tyrant Studios one Monday a month.
