City Pop Nights Ft. Chen Baker at Hero’s Welcome
Ever since Mariya Takeuchi’s Plastic Love mysteriously went viral on YouTube in 2017, funky Japanese pop music from the late 70s and 80s (collectively known as city pop) has slowly solidified itself as a mainstay of global internet culture.
Through the bittersweet yet relentlessly catchy melodies, slappin’ basslines, energetic disco beats, and ample amounts of reverb; listeners vicariously conjure the memories of a nation basking at the height of economic boom, blissfully unaware of the bright future that will never materialize.
Ron Samworth & Pat Pending at Trio All-City Athletics
Ron Samworth has been at the forefront of Vancouver’s creative music scene for over 30 years.
For this special performance at All-City, he leads the Pat Pending Trio, a forward looking ensemble performing original compositions and the occasional deconstructed
standard.
Samworth and the Pat Pending Trio celebrate freedom and innovation, and draw froma wide sonic palette and are indebted to everything in the natural world.
The music is spacious and textural, swinging and thoughtful.
Julian Borkowski Quartet at All-City Athletics

This will be Julian’s first Vancouver show on trumpet in over two years, and will feature two scorching sets of Julian’s original music, most of which has never been performed in Vancouver.

Mary Ancheta Plays Betty Davis at Hero’s Welcome
Betty Davis was one of the most important voices of 1970’s funk….a flamboyant pop diva a full decade before there was such a thing, with a discography full of sexually aggressive and incredibly funky tunes that weren’t hits, but should have been.
She’s long been an influence on Vancouver based keyboardist, producer, and all-around phenom Mary Ancheta, which has led Mary to this special night at Hero’s Welcome full of Davis’ most loved tunes, as well as some deep cuts.
