Returning to the Frankie’s After Dark series, Biboye Onanuga, presents: ’Low & Slow’ — a late-night offering in the tradition of ‘60s-era Spiritual Jazz. The Edmonton-based drummer is joined by an iconoclast ensemble of Vancouver musicians Suin Park (piano), Feven Kidane (trumpet), and reuniting with Edmonton expat Sascha Liebrand (bass).
This evening, Biboye invites you to bathe in the sea of transcendent, meditative vibrations for the modern age. Biboye embraces the abstract essence of instrumental music as an ephemeral expression, cutting through the noise of our modern world. A world he sees as one built for speed, but rarely in service of the pace at which we can best love and be loved.
The quartet’s setlist of original tunes and arrangements is inspired by avant-garde greats who eschew genre, strive for sonic innovation, and dive deep for every performance; Artists such as Ahmad Jamal, Alice Coltrane and the acoustic work of contemporary players Ambrose Akinmusire, Aaron Parks’ trio (Matt Brewer & Eric Harland), and drummer Craig Weinrib (w/Sam Harris).
Frankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. Shows start at 11:00PM and tickets are $10.
