Biboye Onanuga is a British-born Nigerian-Canadian drummer, and imaginative composer based in Edmonton. A recent MacEwan University Music graduate, Biboye quickly became a sought-after player and has made meaningful contributions to the local scene through his instrumental hip-hop/jazz band, Good information, and 2-year-tenure weekly music series, New Standards. In 2019, Biboye’s dedication to the craft led him to further his studies in Finland, where he spent five transformative months at Metropolia University, delving deeper into the intricacies of jazz drumming and composition.
Inspired by innovative artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire, Jamire Williams, and Mikel Patrick Avery, Biboye’s artistic vision embraces the abstract essence of instrumental music to create ephemeral expressions of the experience of moving through the modern world. A world built for speed, but rarely in service of the pace at which we can best love and be loved.
For his first performance in Vancouver as a bandleader, Biboye will be joined by Christopher Fraser on guitar and Chad Galpin on bass.
Frankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. Shows start at 11:00PM and tickets are $10.
