Two-time Western Canadian Music Award winner Krystle Dos Santos will be performing a rare set of Shane’s music at the VIFF Centre, followed by a screening of Any Other Way.

A pioneer of both 1960s Soul music and transgender rights, Jackie Shane never achieved the stardom she deserved. Both the 2024 documentary Any Other Way and the 2017 Numero collection of the same name have gone a long way to redress that wrong and ensure that Shane is properly enshrined as the trailblazer she was.

Two-time Western Canadian Music Award winner Krystle Dos Santos will be performing a rare set of Shane’s music at the VIFF Centre, followed by a screening of Any Other Way. She’ll be performing her signature song Any Other Way, as well as other notable Shane classics like In My Tenement, Sticks & Stones, all with the signature 60s R&B sound that she was known for.

About the film: Any Other Way (Michael Mabbott, Lucah Rosenberg, Canada, 2024, 99 min)

Any Other Way tells the story of R&B singer Jackie Shane who wowed the Toronto scene in the early 1960s, breaking ground as an out Black trans performer, but retreated from the spotlight while on the cusp of fame. The documentary brings Shane’s story to life in her own words using audio conversations with Mabbott recorded prior to the singer’s death in 2019. The film uses animation and re-enactments with drag performer Makayla Couture alongside an array of archival photos from Shane’s past.
