Vancouver-based clarinetist and saxophonist Geoff Claridge has been fascinated for years by the bluesy folk-jazz of the early Jimmy Giuffre 3, a clarinet/guitar/trombone trio inspired by Claude Debussy’s Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp. Each of the three contrasting instruments are meant to fill every role of the ensemble at different points, and in this rendition the roles are further swapped! Expect a few surprises and a lot of down-to-earth bluesy swing in Giuffre’s most adventurous search for new approaches to familiar themes.
