SUMMARY:SOLD OUT Laura Crema Sings Lorenz Hart + Blue Moon Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Laura Crema has a rare interpretive gift that allows her to inhabit a song and dive deeply into the lyrics of an old standard to suggest new meanings\, shades and inferences that have lain dormant until they were lit up by the resonance\, depth\, and warmth of her voice. \nGet Tickets\nBorn and raised in Burnaby BC\, Laura Crema has performed and recorded with some of the finest musicians in Canadian jazz\, Roma jazz\, country\, roots\, and new and improvised music. She has toured and performed across Canada and Europe. She also has had the great honor to play many of Canada’s most prestigious jazz venues\, including The National Art Centre in Ottawa. Laura has recorded six critically acclaimed albums under her name\, the most recent is collection of original songs co-created with guitarist\, Bill Coon. For this unique performance at the VIFF Centre\, Laura has put together a set of some of Lorenz Hart’s most memorable songs written for stage & screen. \nLaura Crema – Vocals\nSharon Minemoto – Keyboard\nBill Coon – Guitar\nConrad Good – Bass\nNino DiPasquale – Drums\n\nAbout the film: Blue Moon (Richard Linklater\, US\, 2025\, 100 min) Ethan Hawke\, Margaret Qualley \nIn what has been described as the performance of his career\, Ethan Hawke plays the legendary songwriter Lorenz Hart. On the evening in 1943 when his long-standing collaborator\, composer Richard Rodgers is celebrating the triumph of the hit musical Oklahoma!\, penned by new partner Oscar Hammerstein\, the alcoholic\, homosexual and devastatingly astute Hart is pinning his hopes on a meeting with his protégé Elizabeth (Margaret Qualley). \n“Blue Moon revels in a fine mind and a great soul\, and Hawke’s embodiment of both is exalted and startling. His makeup renders him unrecognizable and is eerily compelling\, while his vocal self-transformation is nothing short of miraculous.” — Richard Brody\, New Yorker \n“Like a backstage pass for Broadway buffs\, it’s one hell of a show for those in the know\, and a sparkling introduction for the uninitiated.” — Peter Debruge\, Variety \n“As elegantly witty and luxuriantly melancholic as one of Rogers and Hart’s toe-tapping\, heart-swelling compositions.” — Wendy Ide\, The Observer

SUMMARY:Krystle Dos Santos Sings Jackie Shane + Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Two-time Western Canadian Music Award winner Krystle Dos Santos will be performing a rare set of Shane’s music at the VIFF Centre\, followed by a screening of Any Other Way. \nGet Tickets\nA pioneer of both 1960s Soul music and transgender rights\, Jackie Shane never achieved the stardom she deserved. Both the 2024 documentary Any Other Way and the 2017 Numero collection of the same name have gone a long way to redress that wrong and ensure that Shane is properly enshrined as the trailblazer she was. \nTwo-time Western Canadian Music Award winner Krystle Dos Santos will be performing a rare set of Shane’s music at the VIFF Centre\, followed by a screening of Any Other Way. She’ll be performing her signature song Any Other Way\, as well as other notable Shane classics like In My Tenement\, Sticks & Stones\, all with the signature 60s R&B sound that she was known for. \nKrystle Does Santos – Vocals\nJonny Holisho – Drums\nGavin Youngash – Guitar\nBryan Binnema – Piano\n\nAbout the film: Any Other Way (Michael Mabbott\, Lucah Rosenberg\, Canada\, 2024\, 99 min) \nAny Other Way tells the story of R&B singer Jackie Shane who wowed the Toronto scene in the early 1960s\, breaking ground as an out Black trans performer\, but retreated from the spotlight while on the cusp of fame. The documentary brings Shane’s story to life in her own words using audio conversations with Mabbott recorded prior to the singer’s death in 2019. The film uses animation and re-enactments with drag performer Makayla Couture alongside an array of archival photos from Shane’s past. \n“An eye-opening\, jaw-dropping\, foot-stomping wave of jubilation.” — Michael Talbot-Haynes\, Film Threat \n“Any Other Way combines archival materials\, interviews and animated reenactments into a compelling investigation of an elusive life\, as well as a talent so striking you’ll be amazed it remained forgotten for so long.” — Dennis Harvey\, Variety \nAbout Krystle dos Santos\n\nKrystle Dos Santos is a 2x Western Canadian Music Award winning soul\, jazz and R&B singer based out of Vancouver\, Canada. With an extraordinary voice that is commanding\, powerful and rich with talent\, her music\, inspired by classic and neo-soul combined with smooth R&B elements is executed brilliantly; It’s simultaneously elegant\, bold and sensual\, pulling inspiration from her idols Etta James\, Nina Simone\, Toni Braxton and Chaka Khan to name a few.

SUMMARY:Patrick Kao Trio at Frankie's After Dark
DESCRIPTION:The Patrick Kao Trio is a jazz guitar trio devoted to elegance\, swing\, and the enduring language of bebop. Guitarist Patrick Kao leads the ensemble with a refined melodic sensibility\, drawing inspiration from the classic piano trio tradition of Barry Harris and Bud Powell\, and reimagining that rhythmic poise and harmonic depth within a guitar-led setting.\nAnchored by David Caballero on bass and Arvind Ramdas on drums\, the trio is defined by subtle interplay\, buoyant time\, and a shared commitment to clarity and taste. In the lineage of great guitar trios led by Wes Montgomery and Barney Kessel\, the group favors lyricism\, relaxed authority\, and a deep swing over excess.\nThe Patrick Kao Trio offers a sound that is timeless and understated—honoring the tradition while allowing the music to speak with quiet confidence and sophistication.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday & Saturday night at Frankie’s Jazz Club (755 Beatty) at 11PM. Tickets are $10 and are added to your bill at the end of the night. This series is curated & presented by Infidels Jazz.

SUMMARY:Cousin Harley + Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve recovered from that Springsteen movie and still feel guilty for how much you enjoyed A Complete Unknown\, time to refresh your synapses with the golden shower that is Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story\, a hilarious piss-take on the cliches of the rock n roll biopic from the House of Apatow. \nGet Tickets\nIn the part he was born to play\, John C Reilly is the musical chameleon Cox\, whose vertiginous career swings from blues to country\, folk and rock and back again. \nCome join Local Hillbilly heroes Cousin Harley\, for a night of traditional Rockabilly\, Western Swing and early Rock n Roll before the viewing! \nCousin Harley is the rocking hillbilly persona of Paul Pigat\, an extraordinary guitarist vocalist and songwriter. Hailing from Vancouver\, BC\, Cousin Harley has a hard-earned reputation for delivering everything from classic honky tonk and cow punk rippers\, to a helping of western swing and classic jump blues. Cousin Harley can explode like an active volcano\, swing like the Basie Band\, and holler like a lonesome hillbilly in the backwoods of Appalachia\, all at the same time! Having shared the stage with such legendary artists as Brian Setzer\, Jeff Beck\, James Burton and\, Jakob Dylan\, to name a few\, Paul has a hard-earned reputation for delivering the goods and never disappointing. \n“Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has a good beat and you can dance to it.” — Manohla Dargis\, New York Times \n“The film’s ultimate triumph is that it makes audiences genuinely care about a ridiculous rock and roll cartoon who’s Johnny Cash and Ray Charles and Bob Dylan and Glen Campbell and a giant\, mentally challenged baby all wrapped up into a big ball of ridiculousness.” — Nathan Rabin\, AV Club
