SUMMARY:Kevin Romain Trio / Beware of Mr. Baker at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Early bird tickets are available now! There are a limited number of early bird tickets available\, so don’t wait! \nOur latest VIFF Live presentation combines a jazz set led by drummer Kevin Romain and one of the most notorious music docs ever made\, Jay Bulger’s bruising encounter with the legendary Ginger Baker\, aka “the world’s greatest drummer”. \nGet Tickets\nA true virtuoso\, Baker was famous for his stint with Eric Clapton in Cream\, but he saw himself as the heir to Max Roach\, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones\, and later recorded several jazz albums. Neither success nor failure brought him any peace however. Self-destructive and seething with rage\, Ginger was never easy to be around\, as Rolling Stone journalist and filmmaker Bulger found out to his cost… \nKevin Romain is a drummer\, improviser\, composer\, educator\, bandleader and curator based in East Vancouver. Since the early 2000s he has performed regularly across North America as well as Europe\, West Africa\, China and Japan. He studied jazz and contemporary music at Vancouver Community College and has studied the drums with luminaries such as Tomas Fujiwara\, Marcus Gilmore\, Jeff Ballard\, Mark Guiliana\, Dan Weiss\, Bernie Arai and Dylan van der Schyff. \nRomain’s current focus as a bandleader and composer is his post-bop quartet Salience Network. The debut full length record from this group was released in 2023 on The Infidels Jazz record label. Over the past decade Romain has performed extensively as a soloist on the drum set. 2025 sees the release of his first solo record Autopoietic 1\, a collection of improvisations rooted in his highly personal polyrhythmic vocabulary. \nFor this performance\, Romain will be joined by longtime collaborators Cole Schmidt (guitar) and Olive Shakur (bass)\, playing repertoire from the Ginger Baker Trio\, which saw the iconic drummer team up with jazz legends Bill Frisell and Charlie Haden in the mid 1990s.

SUMMARY:Kevin Romain Album Release at Hypha Arts
DESCRIPTION:Hypha Arts: Record release party for Kevin Romain’s “Autopoietic 1”\, presented by The Infidels Jazz and The Hypha Artists Association. \nGet Tickets\n“Autopoietic 1” is the debut solo recording from drummer/improviser Kevin Romain. In his own words: \n“Rhythm induces in a listener a sensation of movement through space\, even while remaining relatively still. Polyrhythm opens a paradoxical space in which we can move through space at multiple speeds simultaneously\, or in multiple directions at once – Dancing in our heads\, substituting dream logic for the laws of physics. These drumset improvisations are miniature explorations of the phenomenology of polyrhythm and the accompanying granular emotional states; a search for the limits of my own sense-making affordances; a dialogue between the various voices that populate my internal landscape. I hope this music is fun to listen to. I think of attention and focus as highly limited endogenous resources and as analogous to/expressions of love. Your time spent with this recording is not taken for granted.” \nAutopoietic 1 was recorded in 2024 at Vancouver’s Afterlife Studios. It will be released in the spring of 2025 on The Infidels Jazz record label. \nwww.kevinromain.com \nWith Jen Yakamovich and Sean Curtis Patrick (WA) \nJen Yakamovich is a Vancouver-based drummer\, writer\, educator\, and improviser. SUMMARY:Biboye Onanuga's Low & Slow at Frankie's After Dark
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the Frankie’s After Dark series\, Biboye Onanuga\, presents: ’Low & Slow’ — a late-night offering in the tradition of ‘60s-era Spiritual Jazz. The Edmonton-based drummer is joined by an iconoclast ensemble of Vancouver musicians Suin Park (piano)\, Feven Kidane (trumpet)\, and reuniting with Edmonton expat Sascha Liebrand (bass).\nThis evening\, Biboye invites you to bathe in the sea of transcendent\, meditative vibrations for the modern age. Biboye embraces the abstract essence of instrumental music as an ephemeral expression\, cutting through the noise of our modern world. A world he sees as one built for speed\, but rarely in service of the pace at which we can best love and be loved.\nThe quartet’s setlist of original tunes and arrangements is inspired by avant-garde greats who eschew genre\, strive for sonic innovation\, and dive deep for every performance; Artists such as Ahmad Jamal\, Alice Coltrane and the acoustic work of contemporary players Ambrose Akinmusire\, Aaron Parks’ trio (Matt Brewer & Eric Harland)\, and drummer Craig Weinrib (w/Sam Harris).\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. SUMMARY:Biboye Onanuga Plays Monk + Straight\, No Chaser at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the VIFF stage\, Biboye Onanuga\, presents: ’The Music of Monk’. \nGet Tickets\nThe Edmonton-based drummer is joined by an iconoclastic ensemble of Vancouver musicians Quincy Mayes (piano)\, Jodi Proznick (bass)\, and John Nicholson (tenor) for an evening of Monk tunes and arrangements before the 1988 documentary Thelonious Monk: Straight\, No Chaser. \n“The key to swing jazz is to swing it.” Monk’s words are often top of mind when I play this music — “Jazz”. One of the beautiful things about this musical tradition is the ability for an individual’s essence to unravel through their playing. Their touch\, feel\, interpretations\, etc . . . they reveal a person. And while technical skill and ability may be heard\, “a genius is the one most like himself” (Monk) — their sound is felt. I am inspired by the players who seek to earnestly express themselves through the medium of music. Monk may have been the greatest of these. So we celebrate him and his contributions the best way we know how – through the music that was uniquely his own. — Biboye Onanuga \nBiboye Onanuga is a British-born\, Nigerian-Canadian drummer\, and imaginative composer. Steeped in the arts scene since high-school\, he quickly became a sought-after player – recently completing his music degree at MacEwan University and already joining nationally-recognized players such as Jim Head\, Rubim DeToledo\, Mboya Nicholson to name a few. Biboye has made meaningful contributions to his local scene through his instrumental hip-hop/jazz band (Good information)\, 3-year-tenure weekly music series (New Standards) and recent Sunday Jazz series (Daze Days). \nAbout Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser\nCharlotte Zwerin’s 1988 documentary draws on 14 hours of prime Monk footage shot by Christian Blackwood in 1967 and 1968 (“like finding the Dead Sea Scrolls of Jazz\,” enthused producer Bruce Ricker. Featuring Monk on tour in Europe\, playing in clubs\, recording\, and in interviews\, the film is supplemented with more recent interviews with band mates and the Baroness Nica de Koenigswarter\, among others.
