SUMMARY:City Pop Nights Ft. Chen Baker at Hero's Welcome
DESCRIPTION:Ever since Mariya Takeuchi’s Plastic Love mysteriously went viral on YouTube in 2017\, funky Japanese pop music from the late 70s and 80s (collectively known as city pop) has slowly solidified itself as a mainstay of global internet culture. Through the bittersweet yet relentlessly catchy melodies\, slappin’ basslines\, energetic disco beats\, and ample amounts of reverb; listeners vicariously conjure the memories of a nation basking at the height of economic boom\, blissfully unaware of the bright future that will never materialize. \nBrought to you by local jazz-fusion group Chen Baker\, City Pop Nights will attempt to bring you said experience in flesh. The night will mostly consist of hits from genre staples such as Miki Matsubara\, Taeko Ohnuki\, Tasturo Yamashita\, and Casiopea; along with Western songs that also echo the sentiment. \nMia Wang – vocals\nXirui Wang – vocals\nNeal Wang – Alto Sax\nJeffrey Chen – guitar\nJustin Juan – keys\nDario Acosta – Drums\nPiyotr Kao – Bass \nCity Pop Nights is presented by Infidels Jazz\, and will be at Hero’s Welcome: 3917 Main Street. \nDoors Open: 7PM \nTickets: $15 in advance\, $20 at the door.Buy tickets today

SUMMARY:Mike Allen Trio Plays John Coltrane's Blue World at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Get your tickets at the early bird price of $18 before September 5. Regular tickets will be $25. \nSixty years ago\, inspired by Jean-Luc Godard and John Cassavetes\, Gilles Groulx made a French-Canadian nouvelle vague movie in Montreal. Le chat dans le sac is a portrait of an earnest\, self-absorbed young man — a would-be revolutionary — and his exploitative relationship with a naive theatre student. To compose the score\, Groulx turned to bebop saxophonist John Coltrane… whose score was finally released in 2022 as the album Blue World. The film is a fascinating time capsule capturing Montreal in the early 60s\, the cultural currents of the time (with newspapers looming large)\, and the sexual attitudes of the period. This screening will be preceded by a live jazz concert by the Mike Allen Trio. \nMike Allen is a legendary tenor saxophonist who has been at the forefront of the Canadian Jazz scene for 30 years. Known for his work with everybody from Michael Bublé to Sonny Greenwich\, Mike is particularly adept at interpreting the music of John Coltrane. Before this special screening of Le chat dans le sac (The Cat in the Bag) Mike will be joined by Adam Thomas on bass\, and Julian MacDonough on drums\, for a unique performance featuring the music of Coltrane’s Blue Room (featuring the soundtrack of the film)\, and other Coltrane compositions. \nJoin us as we celebrate the 98th birthday of John Coltrane and the 60th Anniversary of a French Canadian classic. \nAn accomplished musician who has studied Coltrane in depth and forged a style that is fresh and vital \nJazz Journal International \nGet tickets!

SUMMARY:Clara Lin Trio
DESCRIPTION:Clara is a pianist and composer born in Shenzhen\, a newborn urban city in southern China. She grew up classically trained and exposed to urban music like R&B\, gospel\, Soul\, and cantonese pop. She then traveled to many places and spent most of her time digging into Jazz-related contemporary music. Clara’s music aims to tell a story that threads together all the places she had been living in that ended up in Vancouver\, her generation of displacement\, and nostalgia for a never-go-back homeland through all the musical languages that have influenced her over time.\nFor her very first Frankie’s Performance she will be joined by Dan Howard on Bass & Todd Stewart on Drums.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz.
