SUMMARY:Jazz Feeds Vancouver Jam Session at the Lido
DESCRIPTION:Infidels Jazz is proud to announce our third annual jam session to benefit the Greater Vancouver Food Bank\, with all proceeds going to them as part of Jazz Feeds Vancouver.\n\nThis will be a rare opportunity for all of Vancouver’s jazz instrumentalists to come together for three worthy causes: to play\, to celebrate the holiday season\, and to raise money for those less fortunate.\n\nThe night will be very similar to last year’s jam\, with two different jam sessions happening on the same night. The first one is a straight ahead jam hosted by the Matt Franceschini Quartet featuring Julian Borkowski\, Bella Fedrigo & Karl DeJong\, and the second is a free improv jam hosted by Improv Karoake: Andrea Wong\, Mike WT Allen\, Bahar Khazei\, and Aiden Edwards.\n\nDonations will be collected through the night (cash\, debit\, and credit cards accepted)\, and all given to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank the next day. This event is co-sponsored by my friends at the Fraser MacPherson Jazz Fund.\n\nInfidels Jazz is a live event company that presents almost 200 jazz concerts every year.

DESCRIPTION:Roland Racz is a Hungarian-Canadian jazz pianist and composer\, a new color in the Vancouver jazz scene. Roland has spent most of his professional career in Hungary\, he has been a sought-after pianist and keyboardist in the vibrant music scene of Budapest. He shared the stage with some of the finest Hungarian and international jazz artists such as Peter Szendofi\, Attila Laszlo\, Budapest Jazz Orchestra\, Gabor Winand\, and Rob van de Wouw.\nAfter relocating to Canada\, he quickly became well known in the Ottawa jazz scene where he has performed and worked with Canadian and American jazz greats such as Roddy Elias\, Vinx\, Derrick Gardner\, Don Braden\, Adrian Vedady\, Nick Fraser\, Mike Essoudry\, and Arturo Stable.\nRoland is a multi-genre player\, and his broad musical background truly reflects in his playing and compositions. SUMMARY:Kuyatet / Manila In The Claws of Light at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the spotlight on Filipino director Lino Brocka\, we are pairing his best known film with jazz interpretations of Filipino music led by Victor Noriega\, with his band Kuyatet (“Kuya” means “Brother” in Tagalog). \nBrocka (1939-1991) directed over 50 films until his untimely death\, many of them comic book soap operas (in his own words) firmly in the commercial mainstream of the busy local industry. But he interspersed these production line assignments with fiercely political social realist films which found international acclaim\, and which irked the Marcos dictatorship. Manila in the Claws of Light (also\, confusingly\, known as Manila in the Claws of Darkness and Manilla in the Claws of Neon) is regarded as the greatest Philippine movie ever made. It’s the story of a fisherman\, Julio\, who comes to the big city in the footsteps of his fiancee\, who has gone missing. His experiences expose the exploitation and corruption at the heart of the country. \nBefore the film screens\, enjoy an hour long set from Kuyatet comprising folk melodies\, classics from Filipino composers and new originals inspired by the genre. A veritable plethora of possibilities for re-imagined and adventurous interpretations. Victor Noriega’s first foray into this concept materialized in his 2006 award-winning piano trio release\, “Alay.” \nVictor Noriega – Bandleader/Keyboards\nTristan Paxton – Guitar\nDan Howard – Bass\nJoe Poole – Drums \nAward-winning composer/keyboardist Victor Noriega has been described as having “the sensitivity of Bill Evans\, the propulsion of Horace Silver and the experimentation of Thelonious Monk\,” while his compositions have been characterized as “layered\, complex\, interesting and rhythmic\,” “introspective at times\, energetic and boundary-stretching at others… seamlessly blend[ing] jazz and modern classical inflences.” His most recent recording with studio project Pontius Pilots entitled “Horizons” was released in the Fall of 2020 and features saxophonist Jeremy Udden in an expression of synthesized tones and sonic blends. \nNote: Total running time includes a 20-minute intermission between the music and the film

DESCRIPTION:The name Ásef has its origins in Arabic and Persian cultures. It is a popular name in Muslim communities and carries spiritual and cultural significance. In Hebrew\, the word means to gather or harvest. Ásef has a unique sound melding Middle eastern overtones with jazz improvisation. The members of the group bring to the stage many years of experience playing a variety of music from around the world including Balkan folk\, Tango\, Klezmer\, Flamenco and Bebop. Their compositions embrace this vast range of musical sounds taking the audience on a truly unique musical journey. SUMMARY:Allison Burik\, with Mili Hong & Claire Devlin at Zameen Art House
DESCRIPTION:Allison Burik is a saxophonist\, clarinetist\, improviser\, and composer based in Tio’tia:ke/Montreal\, Quebec. Their current collaborations include Montreal collective “Bellbird\,” experimental duo “Umbrella Pine\,” and the “Mali Obomsawin Xtet.” Their debut solo album\, Realm (2024) explores the sonic possibilities of the woodwinds through electronics and contact microphones\, resulting in soundscapes that are both earthy and alien. \nThis will be their first solo performance in Vancouver. DESCRIPTION:Chris Fraser’s Regulatory Committee is a cross-country post bop outfit fuelled by friendship\, millennial angst\, and a deep need to play hard and fast. Made up of old and new friends from both Vancouver and Montreal\, the Regulatory Committee features Fraser’s original compositions and clever reimaginings of pop hits.\nFraser is joined by co-chairs Claire Devlin on tenor saxophone\, Eli Davidovici on bass\, and Mili Hong on drums.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. Shows start at 11:00PM and tickets are $10.

DESCRIPTION:Bellbird is a collective of Montreal-based musicians who released their debut album Root In Tandem in 2023. While rooted in modern jazz\, Bellbird’s music bares influences from myriad musical styles\, from moving folk melodies to atonal counterpoint to rock grooves that stretch the boundaries of the jazz genre. Capturing the ethos of the band\, the music on their debut album grows out of a mutual curiosity and creativity\, with feelings of space and calm pierced by exhilarating solos and free improvisation. \nGet Tickets\nThis event is presented by Infidels Jazz as part of the Knockouts Series at All-City Athletics. \nAll-City Athletics \n130 W.
