DESCRIPTION:Johanna Hauser (Bass Clarinet) received her bachelor’s degree from Vassar College (honours)\, her master’s degree in performance from the Manhattan School of Music (Andrew Goodman Prize for excellence in clarinet)\, and a stipend for further studies at Yale at Norfolk. Johanna began her career in New York City performing with groups such as Dance Theater of Harlem\, Bel Canto Opera\, the Brooklyn Philharmonia Chamber Orchestra\, The Group for Contemporary Music\, The Queens Symphony and The Queens Symphony Woodwind Quintet.\n\nJohanna teaches at Place des Arts\, and directs and performs with the Kits Classics & Worlds Beyond chamber music series at St. James Hall. She is a member of the Vancouver Inter-cultural Orchestra and has premiered pieces by many local composers.\n\nJohanna can be heard on the soundtrack of Trawna tuh Belvul (National Film Board of Canada) and on the CDs\, L’ivresse de la vitesse (Diffusion/ Media) and The Last Arrow (Dream on Productions). She also plays solo music for group meditations and private functions.\n\nFor this special New Thing performance\, she will be joined by Joshua Zubot (violin) and Kenton Loewen (Drums).\n\nThe New Thing is a monthly series dedicated to free jazz and improvised music. He has brought his music to festivals in Berlin & Helsinki\, concert halls in Istanbul & Brugge\, rock clubs in Rotterdam & Montreal\, and Jazz clubs in New York & Chicago.\n\nHis solo performances are a deeply intimate experience in which he endeavors to share who he is\, how he sees our world\, and the temporary moments of community that we can all embrace together. His latest work for solo baritone saxophone and flute\, “You’re Never Really Alone”\, is an emotionally evocative celebration of the precious relationship between improvisor and audience.\n\nThe percussive worlds of Chacal del Tamborazo and Adrian Avendaño collided in 2018\, performing at Rhythmic Resonance: An Evening of New Music for Bateria [11 Drum Set] Ensemble organised by Vancouver New Music Artistic Director\, Giorgio Manganensi.\n\nThe performance marked the beginning of a journey of camaraderie and friendship brought together through experimental percussive expression. SUMMARY:Tatsuya Nakatani with special guests Kenton Loewen & JP Carter
DESCRIPTION:Tatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde percussionist\, composer\, and artist of sound. Active internationally since the 1990s\, Nakatani has released over 80 recordings and tours extensively\, performing over 150 concerts a year. His primary focus is his solo work and his large ensemble project\, the Nakatani Gong Orchestra. He teaches master classes and lectures at universities and music conservatories around the world. Originally from Japan\, he makes his home in the desert town of Truth or Consequences\, New Mexico. With his activity in new music\, improvisation\, and experimental music\, Nakatani has a long history of collaboration.\n\nNakatani’s distinctive music centered around his adapted bowed gong\, supported by an array of drums\, cymbals\, and singing bowls. In consort with his personally hand-carved Kobo Bows\, he has spent decades refining and developing his sound as an arrangement of formations of vibrations\, incorporated in shimmering layers of silence and texture. Within this contemporary work\, one can still recognize the dramatic pacing\, formal elegance and space (ma) felt in traditional Japanese music.\n\nKenton Loewen (Dan Mangan\, Peregrine Falls\, the Crackling) & JP Carter (Haram\, Destroyer\, Inhabitants) are cornerstones of the Vancouver\, B.C. free jazz and improv scenes and are both founding members of the 8East Collective. Their first album\, It Becomes Us\, was released in 2021 on The Infidels Jazz label. For this opening performance they will be playing Free Jazz Classics\, as well as original improvisations.\n\nThis event will be on October 16th at the Lido at 518 E. Broadway.\n\nTickets are $15 at the door.
