SUMMARY:Cousin Harley + Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:If you’ve recovered from that Springsteen movie and still feel guilty for how much you enjoyed A Complete Unknown\, time to refresh your synapses with the golden shower that is Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story\, a hilarious piss-take on the cliches of the rock n roll biopic from the House of Apatow. \nGet Tickets\nIn the part he was born to play\, John C Reilly is the musical chameleon Cox\, whose vertiginous career swings from blues to country\, folk and rock and back again. \nCome join Local Hillbilly heroes Cousin Harley\, for a night of traditional Rockabilly\, Western Swing and early Rock n Roll before the viewing! \nCousin Harley is the rocking hillbilly persona of Paul Pigat\, an extraordinary guitarist vocalist and songwriter. Hailing from Vancouver\, BC\, Cousin Harley has a hard-earned reputation for delivering everything from classic honky tonk and cow punk rippers\, to a helping of western swing and classic jump blues. Cousin Harley can explode like an active volcano\, swing like the Basie Band\, and holler like a lonesome hillbilly in the backwoods of Appalachia\, all at the same time! Having shared the stage with such legendary artists as Brian Setzer\, Jeff Beck\, James Burton and\, Jakob Dylan\, to name a few\, Paul has a hard-earned reputation for delivering the goods and never disappointing. \n“Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has a good beat and you can dance to it.” — Manohla Dargis\, New York Times \n“The film’s ultimate triumph is that it makes audiences genuinely care about a ridiculous rock and roll cartoon who’s Johnny Cash and Ray Charles and Bob Dylan and Glen Campbell and a giant\, mentally challenged baby all wrapped up into a big ball of ridiculousness.” — Nathan Rabin\, AV Club

SUMMARY:Round Midnight: Ardeshir Plays Dexter Gordon + 40th Anniversary Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:For many of us\, this is the best movie ever made about jazz — and it turns 40 years old this year. \nGet Tickets\nReal life sax legend Dexter Gordon is mesmerizing as American horn player\, Dale Turner (a thinly veiled amalgam of Bud Powell and Lester Young) trying to shake his demons in 1959 Paris\, with loving help from a local fan (Francois Cluzet) and his young daughter. Plagued by years of alcoholism and drug use\, knowing the end is near; he plays every note of his memories and battles with dignity and wisdom\, and then returns home to New York. The forlorn music includes early work of Monk and Bird\, the standards of Gershwin and Porter. Gordon’s contribution aside\, Herbie Hancock is on piano and others such as Freddie Hubbard\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Wayne Shorter\, Ron Carter and Billy Higgins all figure\, with Lonette McKee on vocals. Hancock also composed the film’s beautiful\, Academy Award-winning score. \nDirector Bertrand Tavernier clearly loves and understands jazz\, but he also understands the dynamic between the American artist and a young French acolyte. Before he became a filmmaker Tarvernier was a movie publicist in Paris in the 1960s and looked after such legendary Hollywood directors as John Ford and Howard Hawks. \nBefore the film\, enjoy an hour long live set by Ardeshir and a stellar quartet. \nSaxophonist Ardeshir Pourkeramati brings a deep reverence for the jazz tradition to his tribute to the legendary Dexter Gordon\, channeling the spirit\, sound\, and storytelling that defined Gordon’s music. Grounded in hard bop and post-bop language\, Ardeshir draws inspiration from Dexter’s big\, vocalized tenor sound\, blues-infused phrasing\, and unmistakable sense of swing. Currently based in Vancouver\, BC\, he has performed across a wide range of jazz settings while remaining deeply connected to the lineage of the tenor saxophone tradition. Having completed a doctorate in jazz studies at USC’s Thornton School of Music\, he has worked with notable Canadian jazz musicians including Brad Turner\, Cory Weeds\, Steve Kaldestad\, John Lee\, Jodi Proznick\, and John Korsrud. Through this tribute performance\, Ardeshir honors Dexter Gordon’s legacy with authenticity\, warmth\, and a personal voice rooted in the tradition. \nArdeshir Pourkeramati – Tenor Saxophone\nWinston Matsushita – Piano\nJodi Proznick – Bass\nIzaak Weatherwax – Drums \nThis movie teaches you everything about jazz that you really need to know… It is about a few months in a man’s life\, and about his music. It has more jazz in it than any other fiction film ever made\, and it is probably better jazz; it makes its best points with music\, not words. \nRoger Ebert\, Chicago Sun-Times \nCo-Presented with:

DESCRIPTION:Infidels Jazz\, MODO-LIVE\, I am the Eggplant present…\nThe Sun Ra Arkestra\nTuesday February 24th\, 2026\nThe Pearl\nVancouver\, BC \nGet Tickets\nThe Sun Ra Arkestra was founded in Chicago by Sun Ra himself in the 1950’s. One of the earliest pioneers of both the synthesizer and the Free Jazz revolution of the 1960’s\, Sun Ra used the Arkestra to send a strong spiritual and musical message to the universe\, making it better through positive vibrations\, Afro-futurism\, and music. \nIn 2025\, the Arkestra is known worldwide for their live shows that combine big-band swing\, space-age free jazz\, be-bop\, singing\, dancing\, chanting and Afro-pageantry. The 14 piece Arkestra has been at the forefront of Afrofuturism since its inception and has received Grammy Nominations for its recent albums Lights on a Satellite and Swirling. \nThe Arkestra has only performed in Vancouver a handful of times in its 70+ year history\, and Infidels Jazz & MODO Live are proud to be presenting this legendary ensemble at the Pearl on Feburary 24th \nSpace is the Place!

SUMMARY:True North: Andy Milne in Concert + Film Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Or: Everything You Wanted to Know About the Black Experience in Canada\, But Were Too Afraid to Ask. \nGet Tickets\nMichèle Stephenson’s brilliant essay film is an electrifying history of Black Canada\, a story of displacement and discrimination\, prejudice and Black pride\, from Freedom Road to Africville and the civil rights movement of the 1960s\, fused from a mind-bogglingly rich cache of archival material\, first person accounts\, and a remarkable score by celebrated jazz pianist Andy Milne. Showtimes are 5pm and 8:15pm. \nIn this double-header of a West Coast premiere\, Andy Milne will perform a 45-minute set followed by a 15-minute Q&A (5pm show); and then a longer set sans Q&A (8:15pm show)\, along with a screening of the film at both shows \nThe story of Blacks in Canada is complicated. It is a story of displacement and discrimination\, of the Freedom Road\, and of shanty towns like Africville\, in Halifax. In the second half\, Stephenson hones in on the overspill from the civil rights movement of the 1960s\, and a critical protest at the George Williams Medical School in Montreal. Activists like Rosie Douglas led the charge for change. \nAndy Milne is a 2x JUNO Award-winning pianist & composer known for his Dapp Theory & Unison projects\, and for his work with artists such as Ravi Coltrane\, Steve Coleman\, William Shatner & Bruce Cockburn. His most recent recording\, “Time Will Tell”\, was nominated in 2025 for the JUNO “Best Jazz: Group”. \nThis VIFF Live event is co-presented with Infidels Jazz and part of our Celebrating Black Futures series with the Vancouver Art Gallery\, curated by Kika Memeh.
