SUMMARY:Biboye Onanuga Trio at Frankie's
DESCRIPTION:Biboye Onanuga is a British-born Nigerian-Canadian drummer\, and imaginative composer based in Edmonton. A recent MacEwan University Music graduate\, Biboye quickly became a sought-after player and has made meaningful contributions to the local scene through his instrumental hip-hop/jazz band\, Good information\, and 2-year-tenure weekly music series\, New Standards. In 2019\, Biboye’s dedication to the craft led him to further his studies in Finland\, where he spent five transformative months at Metropolia University\, delving deeper into the intricacies of jazz drumming and composition.\nInspired by innovative artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire\, Jamire Williams\, and Mikel Patrick Avery\, Biboye’s artistic vision embraces the abstract essence of instrumental music to create ephemeral expressions of the experience of moving through the modern world. A world built for speed\, but rarely in service of the pace at which we can best love and be loved.\nFor his first performance in Vancouver as a bandleader\, Biboye will be joined by Christopher Fraser on guitar and Chad Galpin on bass.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. Shows start at 11:00PM and tickets are $10.

SUMMARY:Feven Kidane Sextet | Max Roach 100 | VIFF
DESCRIPTION:Born in January\, 1924\, Maxwell Roach would become one of the defining percussionists of his era. A pioneer in bebop\, he played with game-changers like Charlie Parker\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Charlie Mingus\, Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis\, led a sublime quintet with Clifford Brown in the 1950s\, and kept reinventing his sound\, exploring free jazz and even delving into hip-hop. Roach was a political animal\, and his music was inextricable from his activism. With his wife Abby Lincoln he recorded We Insist! in 1960\, a seminal protest record at the advent of the Civil Rights period. Based on interviews recorded with Roach by co-directors Sam Pollard (Two Trains Runnin’; MLK/FBI; Mr Soul!) and Ben Shapiro in the 1980s\, The Drum Also Waltzes is a landmark celebration of a colossus in African American music. \nIn advance of the screening\, we’re kicking off the Celebrating Black Futures series with a specially commissioned jazz set by the Feven Kidane Sextet and produced by the Jazz Infidels. \nTrumpeter Feven Kidane brings a dynamic group of six to play the music of Max Roach in belated 100th birthday and Black History Month celebrations. She is delighted to bring aboard Quincy Mayes on keys\, Nebyu Yohannes on trombone\, John Nicholson on sax\, Bella Fedrigo on bass\, and Edmonton’s Biboye Onanuga on drums. \nBand:\nFeven Kidane – Trumpet\nNebyu Yohannes – Trombone\nQuincy Mayes – Piano\nBiboye Onanuga – Drums\nJohn Nicholson – Sax\nBella Fedrigo – Bass \nFeven Kidane Sextet: 6:40 pm (50 minute set + ten minute intermission)\nMax Roach: The Drum Also Waltzes: 7:40 pm approx

SUMMARY:Bruce Freedman's Collage / Darren Williams at Tyrant Studios
DESCRIPTION:This special concert will celebrate the release of two new albums on Infidels Jazz by Darren Williams & Bruce Freedman respectively.\nDarren Williams is a musical performance graduate from Toronto where he studied contemporary improvisation at York University with Professor Casey Sokol. Since 1997 Williams has been active as a performer devoted to musical improvisation in all its manifestations. Concert appearances have included collaborations with John Oswald\, Eugene Chadbourne\, Ig Henneman\, Lori Freedman\, and John Abram. As a diverse instrumentalist Williams explores timbral possibilities and various extended techniques on his saxophones with a penchant for reinvention of popular musical forms.\nHe will be releasing his new album “Musical Idiot” through Infidels Jazz on CD / Streaming / Download on February 02\, 2024\, and will be performing a solo set at Tyrant on February 05.\nPerforming their own set\, will be Bruce Freedman’s Collage.\nTransposing his cut-up visual art practice over to music\, saxophonist Bruce Freedman’s COLLAGE disassembles and reassembles musical elements in ways that can surprise the musicians as much as the audience. With Josh Zubot violin\, Jared Burrows guitar\, Karlis Silins bass\, and Kenton Loewen drums\, Freedman’s controlled chaos cuts from intense energy to spacious reflection.\nBruce will be releasing his new album Collage through Infidels Jazz via streaming / Download on January 26\, 2024.\n\nThe New Thing is a monthly series dedicated to free jazz and improvised music. It’s co-presented by Infidels Jazz & NOW Society\, and takes place at Tyrant Studios one Monday a month.

He is honestly so dope I love him so much I’m always happy whenever he does an Infidels show they’re so W. His unfiltered musicianship and personality reflects elements of diasporan identity and Black American music\, tempered by an astute awareness of his sonic surroundings in many online subcultures and in so-called Richmond and Vancouver where he is currently based.\nHis SMURF QUARTET (FRANCIS NALUZ / RICK SON / SETH KITAMURA) is most notorious for how it evocatively communicates his generation’s ideas of diasporan and digital expression through conceptual distillations of music he thinks is cool\, especially 2nd quintet Miles\, late Trane\, Herbie Hancock\, early Wynton Marsalis\, and anyone else who also thinks they’re cool too. Expect fresh memes and tasteful griefing that can shift the mood of the room faster than you can say “?”.
