DESCRIPTION:From Winnipeg Manitoba\, saxophonists Anna Blackmore and Tristan Martinuson are alumni of the University of Manitoba Jazz Studies program who both studied under acclaimed NY saxophonist\, 1996 Thelonious Monk Competition winner and Phil Woods protégé\, Jon Gordon. With Gordon\, both earned a deep appreciation for the Jazz tradition\, which inspires their traditional playing styles and compositions. Having grown alongside each other as musicians on the bandstand with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra\, The TD Ottawa Jazz Fest Youth Ensemble\, Derrick Gardner’s Big Dig! Band and on Gordon’s 2021 Juno-nominated album Stranger Than Fiction\, they have spent the last two years making names for themselves in Vancouver as side musicians and are ready to showcase their talents as co-leaders.\nTenor & Soprano Saxophone – Tristan Martinuson\nBaritone & Alto Saxophone – Anna Blackmore\nPiano – Justin Juan\nBass – Riley Poystila\nDrums – Karl DeJong\nPass the Hat is a monthly series at the Lido presented by Tim Reinert & Infidels Jazz. DESCRIPTION:Johanna Hauser (Bass Clarinet) received her bachelor’s degree from Vassar College (honours)\, her master’s degree in performance from the Manhattan School of Music (Andrew Goodman Prize for excellence in clarinet)\, and a stipend for further studies at Yale at Norfolk. Johanna began her career in New York City performing with groups such as Dance Theater of Harlem\, Bel Canto Opera\, the Brooklyn Philharmonia Chamber Orchestra\, The Group for Contemporary Music\, The Queens Symphony and The Queens Symphony Woodwind Quintet.\n\nJohanna teaches at Place des Arts\, and directs and performs with the Kits Classics & Worlds Beyond chamber music series at St. James Hall. She is a member of the Vancouver Inter-cultural Orchestra and has premiered pieces by many local composers.\n\nJohanna can be heard on the soundtrack of Trawna tuh Belvul (National Film Board of Canada) and on the CDs\, L’ivresse de la vitesse (Diffusion/ Media) and The Last Arrow (Dream on Productions). She also plays solo music for group meditations and private functions.\n\nFor this special New Thing performance\, she will be joined by Joshua Zubot (violin) and Kenton Loewen (Drums).\n\nThe New Thing is a monthly series dedicated to free jazz and improvised music.
