DESCRIPTION:Max Huberdeau is a Vancouver-based jazz pianist\, drummer and composer. He has performed extensively around western Canada with a variety of artists\, including many of Vancouver’s finest jazz musicians. His playing and writing takes particular inspiration from soulful and lyrical pianists such as Keith Jarrett and Aaron Parks.\nHe is excited to bring to Frankie’s a program of intriguing original compositions (some of which can be heard on an upcoming trio record) and canny arrangements of classic jazz repertoire. He is honored to be joined by a top-slot entourage of local talents: Arvind Ramdas on drums\, Atley King on vibraphone\, and David Caballero on bass.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. SUMMARY:Gordy Li Smurf Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Gordy Li is a Chinese-Canadian saxophonist\, synthesist\, and aesthetician residing on unceded Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, Stó:lō\, Səlilwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) lands who has been turning heads with an artistic voice that is super unhinged but in a really hip way. He is honestly so dope I love him so much I’m always happy whenever he does an Infidels show they’re so W. His unfiltered musicianship and personality reflects elements of diasporan identity and Black American music\, tempered by an astute awareness of his sonic surroundings in many online subcultures and in so-called Richmond and Vancouver where he is currently based.\nHis SMURF QUARTET (FRANCIS NALUZ / RICK SON / SETH KITAMURA) is most notorious for how it evocatively communicates his generation’s ideas of diasporan and digital expression through conceptual distillations of music he thinks is cool\, especially 2nd quintet Miles\, late Trane\, Herbie Hancock\, early Wynton Marsalis\, and anyone else who also thinks they’re cool too. Expect fresh memes and tasteful griefing that can shift the mood of the room faster than you can say “?”. Better stay on your toes I think you’ll have a great time !!\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz.
