SUMMARY:Blue Giant
DESCRIPTION:Revered pianist Hiromi Uehar composed the score for this electrifying jazz anime\, a movie which makes no apology for its obsession with the sound and fury of musical ferment. It’s the story of Dai\, a young man who decides he’s going to to be the next John Coltrane. He leaves his sleepy hometown for the crowded nightclubs of Tokyo\, and eventually forms a trio — Jass — with pianist Yukinori and drummer Shunji. But do they have what it takes to make it? \nThe director Yuzuru Tachikawa has described the filim as “a concert in the theatre”\, and that’s right: this movie is all about applying animation to express musicality. Which is why this is the definitive jazz movie of the last decade. \n Mar 23: Screening will be preceded by a free 30-minute set in the atrium by Erika Chow’s Blue Giant Trio at 7:30 pm \nThe film beautifully captures the power of live performance\, the passion and intensity woven into the fabric of jazz\, and most impressively the way they pour their life experiences into their art. So the key for each of them as they develop as musicians is to bare their souls. This is bold\, thrilling\, powerfully moving storytelling. \nRich Cline\, Shadows on the Wall \nBursting off the screen in a cacophony of improvised jam sessions and electrifying solo performances\, Blue Giant proves an intoxicating kaleidoscope of ambition\, passion\, sacrifice and all that jazz. \nJames Marsh\, South China Morning Post \nBlue Giant is as improbably close to watching a live performance as animation can get. A swooning big-screen experience. \nTara Brady\, The Irish Times \nBook Tickets Today

SUMMARY:The Crowd: Live Score by Chris Gestrin - VIFF Centre\, Vancity Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Get your tickets before March 8 at the early bird price of $18 (regular $25). \nMaybe the greatest of all American silent films\, King Vidor’s masterpiece — here screening with a never-before-heard improvised jazz score performed by multiple Juno-winner Chris Gestrin — keys into the faultlines at the heart of the American Dream (and did so just on the brink of the Wall Street Crash and the Great Depression). John is born on the Fourth of July\, 1900 — an auspicious date at the dawn of what will be known as the American Century. Arriving in New York City as a young man\, he’s determined to make a name for himself. He takes a wife — Mary — they have kids. But success remains elusive. And then tragedy strikes… \nThe Crowd is in many ways a simple fable about the common man. But Vidor’s artistry insists that the struggles of an ordinary Joe — or John — can be as compelling\, and as worthy of our empathy\, as those of a king\, a champion\, or any other hero… perhaps even more so\, as most of us fall into the same category. Vidor cast an unknown extra\, James Murray\, as his protagonist\, and was rewarded with a performance of remarkable depth and pathos. Yet within ten years Murray would be dead\, a suspected suicide\, after succumbing to alcoholism and destitution. The film’s mixture of realism (Vidor shot with a hidden camera on New York streets\, anticipating neo-realism by more than a decade) and expressionism remains impressive\, no matter that directors as different as Billy Wilder\, Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica admitted to stealing from it over the years.\n\nAbout Chris Gestrin\nSince graduating with a Film Scoring degree from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in 1995\, Vancouver native Chris Gestrin has become an integral part of the Canadian music scene. As a versatile pianist and multi-keyboardist\, composer\, engineer and producer he has worked on over 400 albums covering a wide range of musical styles. From avant garde electronic improvisations to greasy soul organ music\, introspective piano jazz to top of the charts pop\, rock and hip-hop\, Gestrin is in high demand for his eclectic talents and ability to bring a high level of musical inspiration to any situation. \nAs a jazz artist\, Gestrin has performed on and off the stage not only with his great Canadian colleagues\, but with a who’s who of the Jazz world. Gary Peacock\, David ’Fat Head’ Newman\, Kenny Wheeler\, Jerry Granelli\, Duke Robillard\, to name a few. In the more mainstream music world\, Chris has had the pleasure of working with a large number of prominent artists including Randy Bachman\, Bryan Adams\, D.O.A.\, Bob Rock\, Paul Rodgers\, Colin James\, Jann Arden\, Motley Crue\, K-OS\, Swollen Members\, Jim Byrnes\, Steve Dawson\, Nickelback\, Loudon Wainwright III\, Long John Baldry and Jeff Healey. \nAbout the Band: The Chris Gestrin Organ Trio\nChris Gestrin – Organ/keyboards\nJoe Poole – Drums\nMyles Bigelow – Percussion

SUMMARY:The Blazing Eraz at Frankie's
DESCRIPTION:The Blazing Eraz is a platform created by Tim Proznick that represents the eras of music and artists that have helped shape his musical journey into what it is today. Having grown up in a family of jazz enthusiasts\, players\, and educators\, it has been the single\, most consistent thing in his life. His appreciation comes from building a solid foundation in the many idioms of jazz\, from BeBop like Miles & Coltrane\, Basie Bigband\, ECM from Abercrombie/Metheny\, Fusion of Sco/McLaughlin\, to new artists pushing the envelope such as Glasper\, Yussef Kamaal\, Chris Dave\, & Thundercat.\nWith these foundations\, the aim is to take the knowledge and wisdom received from a lifetime of listening\, and applying it into new\, modern forms of music through musical experimentation and exploration\, without the borders of the “traditionalist”\, while incorporating it to new technology & culture. From here\, inspiration is drawn from the influence of hiphop culture as a whole\, as well as electronic music and production\, Funk\, & world music ranging from Brazilian\, Cuban\, Afrobeat(s)\, and reggae.\nThe Blazing Eraz will be playing original compositions\, as well as trio renditions from Flying Lotus\, Madlib\, Chick Corea\, and others.\nTim Proznick will be performing on the drum kit\, as well as exploring sounds & grooves on Native Instruments Maschine Sampler. Joining him will be some of his favourite musicians to work with\, Tristan Paxton on Guitar\, and Issah Contractor on both Bass & Drums.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. SUMMARY:Dean Thiessen Stranger Friends Orchestra at the Fox
DESCRIPTION:The STRANGER FRIENDS Orchestra is a 15-piece modern big band led by composer Dean Thiessen. The phrase ‘Stranger Friends’ evokes an awareness of the community that can be established through music and music making. The ensemble is comprised of some of the most creative and inspiring young voices in the West Coast music scene. The ensemble is grateful to rehearse\, compose\, and perform on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam)\, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, and Sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. \nThiessen’s original music for this band is rooted in curiosity\, collaboration\, inclusion\, creativity\, and diversity and explores a mixture of hyper-detailed compositions and spontaneous improvisation. With little resemblance of the ‘swing era’ big band sound\, the STRANGER FRIENDS Orchestra explores a mixture of modern musical and cultural influences inspired by traditions of the great African American musicians who created ‘jazz’ as an art form and the youthfulness and innovation of the musicians in the ensemble. \nShow starts at 7:00PM sharp\, and will be finished by 9:30PM. \nBuy tickets today

SUMMARY:Biboye Onanuga Trio at Frankie's
DESCRIPTION:Biboye Onanuga is a British-born Nigerian-Canadian drummer\, and imaginative composer based in Edmonton. A recent MacEwan University Music graduate\, Biboye quickly became a sought-after player and has made meaningful contributions to the local scene through his instrumental hip-hop/jazz band\, Good information\, and 2-year-tenure weekly music series\, New Standards. In 2019\, Biboye’s dedication to the craft led him to further his studies in Finland\, where he spent five transformative months at Metropolia University\, delving deeper into the intricacies of jazz drumming and composition.\nInspired by innovative artists such as Ambrose Akinmusire\, Jamire Williams\, and Mikel Patrick Avery\, Biboye’s artistic vision embraces the abstract essence of instrumental music to create ephemeral expressions of the experience of moving through the modern world. A world built for speed\, but rarely in service of the pace at which we can best love and be loved.\nFor his first performance in Vancouver as a bandleader\, Biboye will be joined by Christopher Fraser on guitar and Chad Galpin on bass.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. Shows start at 11:00PM and tickets are $10.
