SUMMARY:Kelsey Mines / Elsa Nilsson Quartet at Frankie's After Dark
DESCRIPTION:American Bassist Kelsey Mines and flutist Elsa Nilsson met in 2023 and found instant chemistry both artistically and in their friendship. They come together for three nights in the Pacific Northwest\, merging their like-minded proclivity for socially engaged music with a hard charging pulse and deep seated melodies. Joining them is John Hansen on the piano and Machado Mijiga on the drums.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. Shows start at 11:00PM and tickets are $10.

SUMMARY:Brandon Wint: Moving For Love at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver-based poet and filmmaker Brandon Wint presents two deeply-personal short films\, each of which is propelled by poetry and jazz. In Moving For Love Brandon explores for the first time the details of his family’s migration from the Caribbean to Canada in the early 1970s. With help from his mother and grandmother\, Brandon probes the social and familial forces that prompted his family to make the difficult journeys from Barbados and Jamaica. Brandon uses these histories as a portal through which to consider his own relationships to love\, sacrifice and new beginnings\, as a poet who has sought love and belonging in Toronto\, Ottawa\, Edmonton and now Vancouver. The film is scored by Vancouver jazz luminaries Feven Kidane\, Yoro Noukoussi\, and Quincy Mayes. \nThe second short film\, Backbone is a vulnerable memoir exploring how cerebral palsy\, the visible disability with which Brandon lives\, complicates the notion and practical realities of health and self-care. The film maps Brandon’s journey toward forgiving himself\, and his family\, for the ways that his complex physicality made accessing care difficult\, bewildering and sometimes painful. This film\, too\, is propelled by a dynamic musical score which features contributions from Edmonton’s Brian Raine\, Montreal’s Theo Abellard\, and Vancouver’s Anjalica Solomon. Both films use jazz as a means of prompting vulnerability and spiritual fortitude. \nThe night will begin with a musical performance by Feven Kidane\, Yoro Noukoussi\, Quincy Mayes and Brandon Wint. As poet and music critic Harmony Holiday once said “music is important because it governs the boundaries of thought that exceed language.” \nWe hope that this evening of film\, poetry and music will be beyond words. \n6:30 pm: Intros\, live music and poetry\n7:30 pm: Intermission\n7:50 pm: Films and Q&A

SUMMARY:Vince Mai Plays Chet Baker + Let's Get Lost at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:A set of smooth\, sublime\, and smoky jazz from trumpeter Vince Mai backed up by a stellar band with Steve Maddock on vocals. The set will feature many beloved Chet Baker standards and more in the same vein\, followed by the first local screening of Bruce Weber’s documentary about Baker\, one of essential films about jazz. \nMiles Black: Keys\nLaurence Mollerup: Upright bass\nBernie Arai: Drums\nSteve Maddock: Vocals\nVince Mai: Trumpet \nAbout Let’s Get Lost (Bruce Weber\, 1988\, 120 min) \nWith his languid\, cool horn and broken hearted vocal stylings Chet Baker became an icon in the 1950s (it didn’t hurt that he looked like Jimmy Dean). Years of drug addiction hampered his career and hinted at underlying issues\, but he continued to sing and play with haunting delicacy. Photographer Bruce Weber documented his last tour in the 1980s. One of the essential jazz films\, this is achingly tender\, steeped in beautiful music and black and white photography; a love letter to a lost soul. \nThe finest jazz movie ever made. Empire Magazine \nA gorgeous gravestone for the Beat Generation’s legacy of beautiful-loser chic. Jim Ridley\, The Village Voice

SUMMARY:Brad Pearson Trio at Frankie’s After Dark
DESCRIPTION:Brad Pearson has performing professionally on the Vancouver music scene since 2016 when he graduated with a bachelors of applied music from Vancouver Community College; studying classical double bass with Laurence Mollerup\, and electric bass with Cameron Hood. He has performed with local legends Hugh Fraser\, Campbell Ryga\, Brad Turner\, and Buff Allen. This bassist is best known for his associations with saxophone great John Gross\, as well as the rapidly ascending piano virtuoso Jimi James Fraser. Brad has developed his sound from a wide range of influences; both his improvisations and compositions are informed by jazz titans such as McCoy Tyner\, Dexter Gordon\, John Coltrane\, Bill Evans as well as contemporary bassists such as Renaud Garcia-Fons\, Janek Gwizdala\, Mathew Garrison\, and Damien Erskine. The bassists sound and approach was also largely shaped by his pre-academic years playing blues music with Delta Blue\, Metal with GFAP\, and progressive rock with Grizzly Bones. When not performing\, Brad runs Pearson Instruments\, a busy Vancouver guitar repair shop. He also designs and builds his own electric basses which he performs on exclusively when not playing acoustic bass. \nFor this Frankie’s After Dark performance\, Brad will be joined by guitarist Joel Faulkner\, and drummer Jamison Ko\, playing electric renditions of classic jazz standards\, fusion\, and original compositions.

SUMMARY:Feven Kidane Quartet + Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:A fierce talent on the local jazz scene\, trumpeter Feven Kidane presents a very special set of original music inspired by the documentary Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat… music which seeks to connect with the film and embody a learning spirit\, remembrance\, and decades-old shared grief. \nFeven explains\, “this film gives me mixed feelings. not mixed as in “i’m half in”\, but mixed in the fact that the content itself is so emotional that my horn will have to work extra hard. mixed in the fact that its honesty hurts me. this film has me enraged\, inspired\, and activated. it gives me hope for a united Blackness\, but upset by constant thwarted plans for its achievement.” \nFor this occasion\, Feven’s band consists of Quincy Mayes on keys\, Bernie Arai on drums\, and Milo Johnson on bass. \nAbout Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat:\nArtfully juxtaposing archival news reports\, investigative interviews\, and jazz\, Johan Grimonprez’s essay film takes a fresh look at the notorious events in the wake of Congo’s independence in the early 1960s\, culminating in the assassination of the country’s first democratically-elected leader\, Patrice Lumumba. It’s a film about the deceit at the heart of colonialism\, and about how jazz (Louis Armstrong\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Max Roach) figured into the politics of the Cold War and Black Liberation.

SUMMARY:Postcards From Zambia at Hero's Welcome
DESCRIPTION:Postcards From Zambia are a polyrhythmic fusion of modal jazz and traditional percussion music from various Zambian cultures. Though the group draws inspiration from all over this central/southern African country\, their repertoire is especially focussed on Luvale (and related) music from Zambia’s Northwestern Province. In essence\, the Postcards recreate a traditional ngoma ensemble through the orchestration\, improvisation\, and arranging tendencies of the jazz idiom. Percussionist Jason Winikoff and drummer Chris Blaber recreate the tightly interlocking rhythmic foundation while Feven Kidane (trumpet)\, Dean Thiessen (piano)\, and Noah Gotfrit (bass) fill the roles of a call-and-response choir. The result is an energetic\, grooving\, joyful\, and powerful musical meditation that can be enjoyed from the contemplative comfort of your seat or the dancefloor. Bandleader and arranger Jason Winikoff has spent years studying under\, performing alongside\, and working with various elite Zambian dance troupes such as Lenga Navo\, Likumbi Lya Mize Chibolya\, and Chota. He is a student of the renowned cultural custodians Kapalu Lizambo\, Josephine Sombo Muzala Chipango\, William Vunda\, and Douglas Mwila as well as a proud partner of the Likumbi Lya Mize Cultural Association. He is honored to bring a slice of Luvale culture to Vancouver with the help of this scene’s most creative and sensitive musicians. \nThis performance is part of Social Music\, a monthly series presented by presented by Infidels Jazz at Hero’s Welcome. \nDoors Open: 7PM \nHero’s Welcome: 3917 Main Street \nTickets: $15 in advance\, $20 at the door. \nAdmission is 19+.

SUMMARY:Ron Samworth & Melissa Hubert's Etiquette of Dying at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:“When does one begin dying?” That’s the first question posed by this poetical but direct contemplation of mortality. A unique collaboration between guitarist Ron Samworth and filmmaker Melissa Hubert\, The Etiquette of Dying came out of Ron’s experience with cancer a few years ago\, which inspired a suite\, and which in turn inspired Hubert’s 50-minute animated film. After the screening Ron and Melissa will take audience questions\, and then Ron will lead a 4-piece band in an improvised live performance featuring Peggy Lee (Cello)\, Elisa Thorn (Harp) and and Jesus Caballero (Drums). \nThe Etiquette of Dying invites audiences on a transformative audiovisual journey\, encouraging reflection on the human experience and our relationship with mortality. With evocative music and striking visuals\, the piece explores the dimensions of the dying process\, encompassing its mental\, emotional\, and physical aspects. Samworth’s composition captures the nuanced emotions of this transitional period. Through her visual direction\, Hubert evokes a sense of contemplation and contemplation in viewers. Featuring Vancouver musicians Peggy Lee\, JP Carter\, Elise Thorn\, André Lachance\, and Jesus Adrian Caballero Ramirez and narrator Patti Wotherspoon\, the suite provides a rich listening experience through various musical energies\, improvisation\, and instrumental textures.
