SUMMARY:Jesse Zubot / Inedia at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Jesse Zubot is one of those unique musicians whose praxis spans multiple genres and transcends contextualization. \nGet Tickets\nKnown mainly as a violinist\, Zubot is also a multi-instrumentalist and tends to incorporate electronic manipulation and studio gadgetry within his work. For this performance Zubot will perform solo using a violin\, viola and miscellaneous electronics. Zubot’s performance will stem from a place of improvisation and will incorporate multiple sounds and techniques that relate to his work as a film composer for award-winning films such as Bones of Crows\, Indian Horse\, Resident Orca\, Nechako: It Will Be a Big River Again\, Arthur Erickson: Beauty Between the Lines\, Monkey Beach\, and many others. \nThis 60-minute solo performance will be complemented by a preview screening of Inedia (107 mins). Liz Cairns’ mesmerizing debut — filmed on Salt Spring island — tells the disturbing story of a young woman suffering from mysterious food allergies. When all else fails\, she joins a remote island community practicing a lifestyle rooted in the theory of nourishment by light. Initially seduced by its charismatic leader (Susanne Wuest) and other members’ peaceful disposition\, she soon realizes that not everything is as it seems when hidden tensions emerge and food deprivation becomes its own distraction. Zubot’s score — composed with his brother Josh — incorporates a large palette of sounds including gongs\, strings\, wood blocks\, metallaphones\, synthesizers\, Arabic flutes\, drums and software instruments. They were able to create a very unique and haunting score that supports and helps drive the intensity of the film as it follows the dark psychological journey of lead character. The two composers were able to bring each others’ talents to a higher level by complimenting and challenging each other’s creative output. \nAbout Jesse Zubot:\nZubot is a multiple JUNO award-winning and Canadian Screen Awards nominated artist. He is also the recipient of a SOCAN Award\, Leo Award and Canadian Screen Music Award for his work as a film composer. Throughout the years Zubot has collaborated with an extremely diverse range of artists and groups such as Darius Jones\, Tanya Tagaq\, Gord Grdina’s Haram\, Steve Reich\, FYEAR\, Pura Fé\, Dan Mangan\, Mats Gustafsson\, Peggy Lee\, Destroyer\, François Houle\, Saul Williams\, Stars\, Hawksley Workman\, Fond of Tigers\, Marc Ribot\, Sandro Perri\, Kenton Loewen\, Josh Zubot Strings and many others.

SUMMARY:Chris Gestrin / The Lodger at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Presented with an original live score by acclaimed pianist and composer Chris Gestrin\, the first signature Hitchcock movie is based on the Jack The Ripper murders (here renamed “The Avenger”). As the suspicion that a neighbour may not be all he seems\, the cat- and-mouse tension reaches almost unbearable proportions. \nGet Tickets\nMade in 1926 for Michael Balcon’s new Gainsborough studios\, The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog was Hitchcock’s first thriller\, and his first critical and commercial success. Coming shortly after his return from Germany\, it draws heavily on the German expressionist tradition established in such films as The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1919) and Nosferatu (1922). These films\, which used stylized\, angular sets\, high contrast light and shadow to convey disturbed psychological states\, were to be a major influence on the developing director\, and this movie teems with visual invention and excitement. \nThe Lodger was written by Eliot Stannard from a popular novel by Marie Belloc Lowndes (sister of the poet Hilaire Belloc)\, and starred matinee idol Ivor Novello as the mysterious lodger who falls under suspicion. June Tripp\, the young actress who starred as the landlady’s daughter\, Daisy\, was the second of a series of actresses who became blonde at Hitchcock’s insistence – the first was Virginia Valli\, star of The Pleasure Garden(1925). Joe\, Daisy’s policeman fiancé\, jokes\, “I’m keen on golden hair myself\, same as the Avenger is”. It soon became clear that Hitchcock had similar tastes. \nThe Lodger was a great success\, and quickly established Hitchcock as a name director. \nHitchcock: “The Lodger was the first true Hitchcock movie… the first picture possibly influenced by my period in Germany… the first time I exercised my style. I took a pure narrative and\, for the first time\, presented ideas in purely visual terms…” \nTruffaut: “A very good movie which showed great visual inventiveness. I really enjoyed it.” \nAbout Chris Gestrin\nSince graduating with a Film Scoring degree from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in 1995\, Vancouver native Chris Gestrin has become an integral part of the Canadian music scene. As a versatile pianist and multi-keyboardist\, composer\, engineer and producer he has worked on over 400 albums covering a wide range of musical styles. From avant garde electronic improvisations to greasy soul organ music\, introspective piano jazz to top of the charts pop\, rock and hip-hop\, Gestrin is in high demand for his eclectic talents and ability to bring a high level of musical inspiration to any situation. \nAs a jazz artist\, Gestrin has performed on and off the stage not only with his great Canadian colleagues\, but with a who’s who of the Jazz world. Gary Peacock\, David ’Fat Head’ Newman\, Kenny Wheeler\, Jerry Granelli\, Duke Robillard\, to name a few. In the more mainstream music world\, Chris has had the pleasure of working with a large number of prominent artists including Randy Bachman\, Bryan Adams\, D.O.A.\, Bob Rock\, Paul Rodgers\, Colin James\, Jann Arden\, Motley Crue\, K-OS\, Swollen Members\, Jim Byrnes\, Steve Dawson\, Nickelback\, Loudon Wainwright III\, Long John Baldry and Jeff Healey.

SUMMARY:Mary Ancheta plays Betty Davis at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Early bird tickets are available now! There are a limited number of early bird tickets available\, so don’t wait! \nGet Tickets\nIf you don’t know the Betty Davis\, prepare to be blown away. With her deep\, raw\, earthy voice\, a knack for stringing together funky riffs\, and sexually super-charged lyrics\, Davis shook and shocked American soul in the early 70s. As her husband Miles Davis said: “She was Madonna before Madonna\, Prince before Prince.” Betty introduced Miles to Jimi Hendrix and psychedelic rock\, as well as to 70s fashion; he featured her on Filles de Kilimanjaro and produced some of her prime recordings before the inevitable split. Albums Betty Davis\, They Say I’m Different and Nasty Gal included musicians from Sly and the Family Stone and Tower of Power\, but failed to chart — only to be rediscovered and celebrated decades after her retirement. Coming somewhere in the lineage between Ma Rainey\, Tina Turner\, and Donna Summer\, Davis more than stands the test of time\, she’s an electrifying talent. \nDavis has long been an influence on Vancouver based keyboardist\, producer\, and all-around phenom Mary Ancheta\, which has led Mary to this special night at VIFF full of Davis’ most loved tunes\, as well as some deep cuts\, with Dawn Pemberton on vocals. The live music portion of the event will be followed by a short intermission\, and then a rare screening of Phil Cox’s invaluable 2017 film (55 min)\, made in collaboration with Davis a few years before her death from cancer in 2022. \nMary Ancheta Quintet plays Betty Davis featuring Dawn Pemberton \nDawn Pemberton: Vocals\nMary Ancheta: keys\nTristan Paxton: guitar\nDominic Conway: sax\nDrums: Paul Clark \nMary Ancheta is a Canadian Filipina born in Hamilton\, Ontario. While teaching at the Ontario Conservatory of Music she received her B.A. of Music at McMaster University. Now living in Vancouver\, Mary is a composer and bandleader who has performed all across Canada\, in Australia\, New York etc\,

SUMMARY:Biboye Onanuga Plays Monk + Straight\, No Chaser at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Returning to the VIFF stage\, Biboye Onanuga\, presents: ’The Music of Monk’. \nGet Tickets\nThe Edmonton-based drummer is joined by an iconoclastic ensemble of Vancouver musicians Quincy Mayes (piano)\, Jodi Proznick (bass)\, and John Nicholson (tenor) for an evening of Monk tunes and arrangements before the 1988 documentary Thelonious Monk: Straight\, No Chaser. \n“The key to swing jazz is to swing it.” Monk’s words are often top of mind when I play this music — “Jazz”. One of the beautiful things about this musical tradition is the ability for an individual’s essence to unravel through their playing. Their touch\, feel\, interpretations\, etc . . . they reveal a person. And while technical skill and ability may be heard\, “a genius is the one most like himself” (Monk) — their sound is felt. I am inspired by the players who seek to earnestly express themselves through the medium of music. Monk may have been the greatest of these. So we celebrate him and his contributions the best way we know how – through the music that was uniquely his own. — Biboye Onanuga \nBiboye Onanuga is a British-born\, Nigerian-Canadian drummer\, and imaginative composer. Steeped in the arts scene since high-school\, he quickly became a sought-after player – recently completing his music degree at MacEwan University and already joining nationally-recognized players such as Jim Head\, Rubim DeToledo\, Mboya Nicholson to name a few. Biboye has made meaningful contributions to his local scene through his instrumental hip-hop/jazz band (Good information)\, 3-year-tenure weekly music series (New Standards) and recent Sunday Jazz series (Daze Days). \nAbout Thelonious Monk: Straight No Chaser\nCharlotte Zwerin’s 1988 documentary draws on 14 hours of prime Monk footage shot by Christian Blackwood in 1967 and 1968 (“like finding the Dead Sea Scrolls of Jazz\,” enthused producer Bruce Ricker. Featuring Monk on tour in Europe\, playing in clubs\, recording\, and in interviews\, the film is supplemented with more recent interviews with band mates and the Baroness Nica de Koenigswarter\, among others.

SUMMARY:Kevin Romain Trio / Beware of Mr. Baker at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Early bird tickets are available now! There are a limited number of early bird tickets available\, so don’t wait! \nOur latest VIFF Live presentation combines a jazz set led by drummer Kevin Romain and one of the most notorious music docs ever made\, Jay Bulger’s bruising encounter with the legendary Ginger Baker\, aka “the world’s greatest drummer”. \nGet Tickets\nA true virtuoso\, Baker was famous for his stint with Eric Clapton in Cream\, but he saw himself as the heir to Max Roach\, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones\, and later recorded several jazz albums. Neither success nor failure brought him any peace however. Self-destructive and seething with rage\, Ginger was never easy to be around\, as Rolling Stone journalist and filmmaker Bulger found out to his cost… \nKevin Romain is a drummer\, improviser\, composer\, educator\, bandleader and curator based in East Vancouver. Since the early 2000s he has performed regularly across North America as well as Europe\, West Africa\, China and Japan. He studied jazz and contemporary music at Vancouver Community College and has studied the drums with luminaries such as Tomas Fujiwara\, Marcus Gilmore\, Jeff Ballard\, Mark Guiliana\, Dan Weiss\, Bernie Arai and Dylan van der Schyff. \nRomain’s current focus as a bandleader and composer is his post-bop quartet Salience Network. The debut full length record from this group was released in 2023 on The Infidels Jazz record label. Over the past decade Romain has performed extensively as a soloist on the drum set. 2025 sees the release of his first solo record Autopoietic 1\, a collection of improvisations rooted in his highly personal polyrhythmic vocabulary. \nFor this performance\, Romain will be joined by longtime collaborators Cole Schmidt (guitar) and Olive Shakur (bass)\, playing repertoire from the Ginger Baker Trio\, which saw the iconic drummer team up with jazz legends Bill Frisell and Charlie Haden in the mid 1990s.

SUMMARY:Feven Kidane & Tiny Pyramids Play Sun Ra at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the music of Sun Ra\, two of Vancouver’s strongest creative voices join forces for a one-night only performance at the VIFF Centre\, along with a rare screening of the revolutionary 1974 Afro-Futurist film Space is the Place\, featuring Sun Ra. \nFeven Kidane is a Vancouver-based trumpeter who has been selling out shows at the VIFF Centre\, the Vancouver International Jazz Festival\, and numerous other venues for the past few years. For this special perfomance she’ll be collaborating with Tiny Pyramids\, a group of interstellar travellers who perform the music of Sun Ra\, featuring Dan Gaucher on drums\, Colin Cowan on bass\, Mary Ancheta on keyboards\, and Tom Wherrett on guitar. \nCome join Feven & Tiny Pyramids on a journey of sonic expansion that will take you parsecs away from your troubles and deliver you back to a new and improved Nebula. \nAfter their set\, we’ll enjoy Sun Ra’s one-of-a-kind film Space is the Place\, inspired by the concept album of the same name and a kind of Ur-text for Afrofuturism. It’s a wild\, kaleidoscopic whirl of science fiction\, sharp social commentary\, goofy pseudo-blaxploitation stylistics\, and thrilling concert performance\, in which the pharaonic Ra and his Arkestra lead an intergalactic movement to resettle the Black race on their utopian space colony.

SUMMARY:James Danderfer Sextet: A Tribute to Artie Shaw at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:One of the most popular and intriguing big band leaders of the Swing era\, Artie Shaw took jazz clarinet to a new level of artistry and celebrity. On occasion\, Shaw would tour with a smaller group\, his Gramercy Five\, which became one of the fixtures of small group swing. Come and enjoy a rare performance of this melodic and jubilant music featuring James Danderfer clarinet\, Bill Coon guitar\, Sharon Minemoto piano\, Max Huberdeau vibraphone\, Dan Howard bass and Joe Poole drums\, to be followed by a screening of Artie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got. \nArtie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got (1985\, 115 min)\nAnchored by an incisive interview with its then 72-year-old subject\, Artie Shaw: Time is All You’ve Got looks back on the five-decade career of “King of the Clarinet” Artie Shaw (1910-2004)\, one of the most popular stars of the 1930s and ’40s Swing era. Brigitte Berman’s film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1985\, and is screening in a new 4K restoration. Featuring: Artie Shaw\, Polly Haynes\, John Wexley\, Lee Castle\, John Best\, Helen Forrest\, Buddy Rich\, Mel Tormé. \nIn an era of separate white and Black bands\, Shaw broke the color barrier by hiring legendary African American musicians like Billie Holiday\, Hot Lips Page and Roy Eldridge for his bands. Shaw’s restlessness and intellectual curiosity (he’d author four books of fiction and non-fiction) led him to shun celebrity and retire from show business in the late 1940s\, with only occasional comebacks after. Known also as a ladies’ man\, Shaw’s eight wives included actresses Ava Gardner\, Lana Turner\, Doris Dowling\, Evelyn Keyes\, and novelist Kathleen Winsor\, author of the notoriously racy bestseller Forever Amber.

SUMMARY:Brandon Wint: Moving For Love at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver-based poet and filmmaker Brandon Wint presents two deeply-personal short films\, each of which is propelled by poetry and jazz. In Moving For Love Brandon explores for the first time the details of his family’s migration from the Caribbean to Canada in the early 1970s. With help from his mother and grandmother\, Brandon probes the social and familial forces that prompted his family to make the difficult journeys from Barbados and Jamaica. Brandon uses these histories as a portal through which to consider his own relationships to love\, sacrifice and new beginnings\, as a poet who has sought love and belonging in Toronto\, Ottawa\, Edmonton and now Vancouver. The film is scored by Vancouver jazz luminaries Feven Kidane\, Yoro Noukoussi\, and Quincy Mayes. \nThe second short film\, Backbone is a vulnerable memoir exploring how cerebral palsy\, the visible disability with which Brandon lives\, complicates the notion and practical realities of health and self-care. The film maps Brandon’s journey toward forgiving himself\, and his family\, for the ways that his complex physicality made accessing care difficult\, bewildering and sometimes painful. This film\, too\, is propelled by a dynamic musical score which features contributions from Edmonton’s Brian Raine\, Montreal’s Theo Abellard\, and Vancouver’s Anjalica Solomon. Both films use jazz as a means of prompting vulnerability and spiritual fortitude. \nThe night will begin with a musical performance by Feven Kidane\, Yoro Noukoussi\, Quincy Mayes and Brandon Wint. As poet and music critic Harmony Holiday once said “music is important because it governs the boundaries of thought that exceed language.” \nWe hope that this evening of film\, poetry and music will be beyond words. \n6:30 pm: Intros\, live music and poetry\n7:30 pm: Intermission\n7:50 pm: Films and Q&A

SUMMARY:Vince Mai Plays Chet Baker + Let's Get Lost at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:A set of smooth\, sublime\, and smoky jazz from trumpeter Vince Mai backed up by a stellar band with Steve Maddock on vocals. The set will feature many beloved Chet Baker standards and more in the same vein\, followed by the first local screening of Bruce Weber’s documentary about Baker\, one of essential films about jazz. \nMiles Black: Keys\nLaurence Mollerup: Upright bass\nBernie Arai: Drums\nSteve Maddock: Vocals\nVince Mai: Trumpet \nAbout Let’s Get Lost (Bruce Weber\, 1988\, 120 min) \nWith his languid\, cool horn and broken hearted vocal stylings Chet Baker became an icon in the 1950s (it didn’t hurt that he looked like Jimmy Dean). Years of drug addiction hampered his career and hinted at underlying issues\, but he continued to sing and play with haunting delicacy. Photographer Bruce Weber documented his last tour in the 1980s. One of the essential jazz films\, this is achingly tender\, steeped in beautiful music and black and white photography; a love letter to a lost soul. \nThe finest jazz movie ever made. Empire Magazine \nA gorgeous gravestone for the Beat Generation’s legacy of beautiful-loser chic. Jim Ridley\, The Village Voice

SUMMARY:Feven Kidane Quartet + Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:A fierce talent on the local jazz scene\, trumpeter Feven Kidane presents a very special set of original music inspired by the documentary Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat… music which seeks to connect with the film and embody a learning spirit\, remembrance\, and decades-old shared grief. \nFeven explains\, “this film gives me mixed feelings. not mixed as in “i’m half in”\, but mixed in the fact that the content itself is so emotional that my horn will have to work extra hard. mixed in the fact that its honesty hurts me. this film has me enraged\, inspired\, and activated. it gives me hope for a united Blackness\, but upset by constant thwarted plans for its achievement.” \nFor this occasion\, Feven’s band consists of Quincy Mayes on keys\, Bernie Arai on drums\, and Milo Johnson on bass. \nAbout Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat:\nArtfully juxtaposing archival news reports\, investigative interviews\, and jazz\, Johan Grimonprez’s essay film takes a fresh look at the notorious events in the wake of Congo’s independence in the early 1960s\, culminating in the assassination of the country’s first democratically-elected leader\, Patrice Lumumba. It’s a film about the deceit at the heart of colonialism\, and about how jazz (Louis Armstrong\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Max Roach) figured into the politics of the Cold War and Black Liberation.

SUMMARY:Ron Samworth & Melissa Hubert's Etiquette of Dying at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:“When does one begin dying?” That’s the first question posed by this poetical but direct contemplation of mortality. A unique collaboration between guitarist Ron Samworth and filmmaker Melissa Hubert\, The Etiquette of Dying came out of Ron’s experience with cancer a few years ago\, which inspired a suite\, and which in turn inspired Hubert’s 50-minute animated film. After the screening Ron and Melissa will take audience questions\, and then Ron will lead a 4-piece band in an improvised live performance featuring Peggy Lee (Cello)\, Elisa Thorn (Harp) and and Jesus Caballero (Drums). \nThe Etiquette of Dying invites audiences on a transformative audiovisual journey\, encouraging reflection on the human experience and our relationship with mortality. With evocative music and striking visuals\, the piece explores the dimensions of the dying process\, encompassing its mental\, emotional\, and physical aspects. Samworth’s composition captures the nuanced emotions of this transitional period. Through her visual direction\, Hubert evokes a sense of contemplation and contemplation in viewers. SUMMARY:Mike Allen Trio Plays John Coltrane's Blue World at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Get your tickets at the early bird price of $18 before September 5. Regular tickets will be $25. \nSixty years ago\, inspired by Jean-Luc Godard and John Cassavetes\, Gilles Groulx made a French-Canadian nouvelle vague movie in Montreal. Le chat dans le sac is a portrait of an earnest\, self-absorbed young man — a would-be revolutionary — and his exploitative relationship with a naive theatre student. To compose the score\, Groulx turned to bebop saxophonist John Coltrane… whose score was finally released in 2022 as the album Blue World. The film is a fascinating time capsule capturing Montreal in the early 60s\, the cultural currents of the time (with newspapers looming large)\, and the sexual attitudes of the period. This screening will be preceded by a live jazz concert by the Mike Allen Trio. \nMike Allen is a legendary tenor saxophonist who has been at the forefront of the Canadian Jazz scene for 30 years. Known for his work with everybody from Michael Bublé to Sonny Greenwich\, Mike is particularly adept at interpreting the music of John Coltrane. Before this special screening of Le chat dans le sac (The Cat in the Bag) Mike will be joined by Adam Thomas on bass\, and Julian MacDonough on drums\, for a unique performance featuring the music of Coltrane’s Blue Room (featuring the soundtrack of the film)\, and other Coltrane compositions. \nJoin us as we celebrate the 98th birthday of John Coltrane and the 60th Anniversary of a French Canadian classic. \nAn accomplished musician who has studied Coltrane in depth and forged a style that is fresh and vital \nJazz Journal International \nGet tickets!

SUMMARY:Blue Giant
DESCRIPTION:Revered pianist Hiromi Uehar composed the score for this electrifying jazz anime\, a movie which makes no apology for its obsession with the sound and fury of musical ferment. It’s the story of Dai\, a young man who decides he’s going to to be the next John Coltrane. He leaves his sleepy hometown for the crowded nightclubs of Tokyo\, and eventually forms a trio — Jass — with pianist Yukinori and drummer Shunji. But do they have what it takes to make it? \nThe director Yuzuru Tachikawa has described the filim as “a concert in the theatre”\, and that’s right: this movie is all about applying animation to express musicality. Which is why this is the definitive jazz movie of the last decade. \n Mar 23: Screening will be preceded by a free 30-minute set in the atrium by Erika Chow’s Blue Giant Trio at 7:30 pm \nThe film beautifully captures the power of live performance\, the passion and intensity woven into the fabric of jazz\, and most impressively the way they pour their life experiences into their art. So the key for each of them as they develop as musicians is to bare their souls. This is bold\, thrilling\, powerfully moving storytelling. \nRich Cline\, Shadows on the Wall \nBursting off the screen in a cacophony of improvised jam sessions and electrifying solo performances\, Blue Giant proves an intoxicating kaleidoscope of ambition\, passion\, sacrifice and all that jazz. \nJames Marsh\, South China Morning Post \nBlue Giant is as improbably close to watching a live performance as animation can get. A swooning big-screen experience. \nTara Brady\, The Irish Times \nBook Tickets Today
