DESCRIPTION:Or: Everything You Wanted to Know About the Black Experience in Canada\, But Were Too Afraid to Ask. \nGet Tickets\nMichèle Stephenson’s brilliant essay film is an electrifying history of Black Canada\, a story of displacement and discrimination\, prejudice and Black pride\, from Freedom Road to Africville and the civil rights movement of the 1960s\, fused from a mind-bogglingly rich cache of archival material\, first person accounts\, and a remarkable score by celebrated jazz pianist Andy Milne. Showtimes are 5pm and 8:15pm. \nIn this double-header of a West Coast premiere\, Andy Milne will perform a 45-minute set followed by a 15-minute Q&A (5pm show); and then a longer set sans Q&A (8:15pm show)\, along with a screening of the film at both shows \nThe story of Blacks in Canada is complicated. It is a story of displacement and discrimination\, of the Freedom Road\, and of shanty towns like Africville\, in Halifax. In the second half\, Stephenson hones in on the overspill from the civil rights movement of the 1960s\, and a critical protest at the George Williams Medical School in Montreal. Activists like Rosie Douglas led the charge for change. \nAndy Milne is a 2x JUNO Award-winning pianist & composer known for his Dapp Theory & Unison projects\, and for his work with artists such as Ravi Coltrane\, Steve Coleman\, William Shatner & Bruce Cockburn. DESCRIPTION:The great Vince Guaraldi is best known for his iconic compositions and performance from Charles M Schultz’s beloved Charlie Brown Christmas Special (1965). He continued to write exciting and clever music for 16 more ’Peanuts’ TV specials over the next 12 years of his career\, as well as the score for Chuck’s first feature length movie: A Boy Named Charlie Brown. The Dean Thiessen 5-tet is paying homage to the Christmas-spirit origins of his career as well as the most catchy ear-worms in the years that followed. After the set\, there will be a brief intermission\, then enjoy the movie. \nSOLD OUT \nDean Thiessen – piano\nBonnie Northgraves – trumpet\nJohn Nicholson – flute\nBella Fedrigo – bass\nTyler Murray – drums \nAbout the film: A Boy Named Charlie Brown (Bill Melendez\, 1969\, 85 min)\nCharlie Brown enters — and wins! — the school spelling bee contest and is sent to compete in the nationals… The first Peanuts movie makes the most of the opportunities afforded by the big screen format: it’s a much more sophisticated piece of visual storytelling than the TV specials. Vince Guaraldi contributed the instrumental score (much of it drawn from the TV pieces)\, while John Scott Trotter and Rod McKuen also contributed songs. All three composers were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song\, though they lost to the Beatles’ Let It Be.

Taking cues from the vintage stylings of the 1940s\, 50s\, and 60s\, the Leading Ladies blend beloved jazz and blues classics with fresh\, original arrangements and a high-energy\, swingin’ performance style. Directed by trombonist Casey Thomas-Burns\, this dynamic and vibrant group of women first came together to perform a single show in 2019. They’ve stuck together ever since. \nAbout the film: The Nutcracker at Wethersfield (Annie Sundberg\, 2025\, 83 min) \nBack in the long\, dark Covid winter of 2020\, there was no way the New York City Ballet could mount its beloved traditional Christmas production of Tchaikovsky’s magical fairytale. But choreographer Troy Schumacher had a dream to save the show and get his fellow dancers back to work. Relocating two hours’ drive north of Time Square\, Troy set about staging The Nutcracker in and around the magnificent Wethersfield country estate in the Hudson Valley. With only a couple of weeks to rehearse\, 50 dancers and production crew come together to reimagine a classic without a stage\, wings\, or even seats for the socially-distanced audience. \nAward-winning filmmaker Annie Sundberg (The Devil Comes on Horseback) was on hand to celebrate their trials and triumphs.

From avant garde electronic improvisations to greasy soul organ music\, introspective piano jazz to top-of-the-charts pop\, rock\, and hip-hop\, Gestrin is in high demand for his eclectic talents and ability to bring a high level of musical inspiration to any situation. \nKeith Jarrett’s legendary performance in January 1975 nearly didn’t happen. Based on a true story\, Köln 75 explores how the concert was conceived and orchestrated by the efforts of an up-and-coming teenage concert promoter\, Vera Brandes (played by Mala Emde). Jazz aficionados know that Cory\, when playing tenor or alto sax\, conveys an unerring sense of swing. Recording more than 20 albums as a leader that document his dynamic saxophone playing on both hard-swinging tunes and gentle ballads\, he has shared stages and recording studios with the likes of Bill Charlap\, Joey DeFrancesco\, Champian Fulton\, Jeff Hamilton\, Harold Mabern\, Roy McCurdy\, Brad Turner\, and many other high-level artists. He’s a fearless musician who embraces a broad range of playing situations and then delivers with performances that shine. \nOn this night he will be joined by pianist Sharon Minemoto\, bassist David Caballero and drummer Jesse Cahill to play music from Sonny Rollins’ 1957 Riverside Records release The Sound Of Sonny. Sonny’s performances and recordings were at a peak during 1957 as Down Beat magazine proclaimed him the Critics’ Poll winner under the category of ’New Star’ of the tenor saxophone. \nThis performance will be part of Vancouver Celebrates Sonny\, a multi-venue celebration in honour of the great Sonny Rollins’ birthday. \nAbout Sonny Rollins: Saxophone Colossus (Robert Mugge\, 1986\, 101 min\, Ira Gitler\, Gary Giddins\, Francis Davis) \n“In addition to capturing Rollins in prime form\, wielding his tenor in ways that have elicited hosannas from fans and critics alike for decades on end\, [the film] examines the saxophonist’s methodical approach to performing and improvising. Practice alone may take some musicians to Carnegie Hall\, but as Rollins tells Mugge at one point\, meditation and visualization are a big part of his pre-concert regimen. Here we also see\, during an outdoors concert filmed at the Opus 40 quarry garden in upstate New York\, various aspects of Rollins’ persona onstage: the full-throated improviser who seems incapable of physically exhausting himself or depleting the wealth of his ideas; the gifted dramatist\, skillfully balancing emotional tension and release; the unabashed entertainer\, whimsically stringing together the familiar melodies that pop into his head. Liz Cairns’ mesmerizing debut — filmed on Salt Spring island — tells the disturbing story of a young woman suffering from mysterious food allergies. When all else fails\, she joins a remote island community practicing a lifestyle rooted in the theory of nourishment by light. Initially seduced by its charismatic leader (Susanne Wuest) and other members’ peaceful disposition\, she soon realizes that not everything is as it seems when hidden tensions emerge and food deprivation becomes its own distraction. Zubot’s score — composed with his brother Josh — incorporates a large palette of sounds including gongs\, strings\, wood blocks\, metallaphones\, synthesizers\, Arabic flutes\, drums and software instruments. They were able to create a very unique and haunting score that supports and helps drive the intensity of the film as it follows the dark psychological journey of lead character. Coming shortly after his return from Germany\, it draws heavily on the German expressionist tradition established in such films as The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1919) and Nosferatu (1922). These films\, which used stylized\, angular sets\, high contrast light and shadow to convey disturbed psychological states\, were to be a major influence on the developing director\, and this movie teems with visual invention and excitement. \nThe Lodger was written by Eliot Stannard from a popular novel by Marie Belloc Lowndes (sister of the poet Hilaire Belloc)\, and starred matinee idol Ivor Novello as the mysterious lodger who falls under suspicion. June Tripp\, the young actress who starred as the landlady’s daughter\, Daisy\, was the second of a series of actresses who became blonde at Hitchcock’s insistence – the first was Virginia Valli\, star of The Pleasure Garden(1925). Joe\, Daisy’s policeman fiancé\, jokes\, “I’m keen on golden hair myself\, same as the Avenger is”. It soon became clear that Hitchcock had similar tastes. \nThe Lodger was a great success\, and quickly established Hitchcock as a name director. \nHitchcock: “The Lodger was the first true Hitchcock movie… the first picture possibly influenced by my period in Germany… the first time I exercised my style. As her husband Miles Davis said: “She was Madonna before Madonna\, Prince before Prince.” Betty introduced Miles to Jimi Hendrix and psychedelic rock\, as well as to 70s fashion; he featured her on Filles de Kilimanjaro and produced some of her prime recordings before the inevitable split. Albums Betty Davis\, They Say I’m Different and Nasty Gal included musicians from Sly and the Family Stone and Tower of Power\, but failed to chart — only to be rediscovered and celebrated decades after her retirement. Coming somewhere in the lineage between Ma Rainey\, Tina Turner\, and Donna Summer\, Davis more than stands the test of time\, she’s an electrifying talent. \nDavis has long been an influence on Vancouver based keyboardist\, producer\, and all-around phenom Mary Ancheta\, which has led Mary to this special night at VIFF full of Davis’ most loved tunes\, as well as some deep cuts\, with Dawn Pemberton on vocals. So we celebrate him and his contributions the best way we know how – through the music that was uniquely his own. — Biboye Onanuga \nBiboye Onanuga is a British-born\, Nigerian-Canadian drummer\, and imaginative composer. Steeped in the arts scene since high-school\, he quickly became a sought-after player – recently completing his music degree at MacEwan University and already joining nationally-recognized players such as Jim Head\, Rubim DeToledo\, Mboya Nicholson to name a few. There are a limited number of early bird tickets available\, so don’t wait! \nOur latest VIFF Live presentation combines a jazz set led by drummer Kevin Romain and one of the most notorious music docs ever made\, Jay Bulger’s bruising encounter with the legendary Ginger Baker\, aka “the world’s greatest drummer”. \nGet Tickets\nA true virtuoso\, Baker was famous for his stint with Eric Clapton in Cream\, but he saw himself as the heir to Max Roach\, Art Blakey and Elvin Jones\, and later recorded several jazz albums. Neither success nor failure brought him any peace however. Self-destructive and seething with rage\, Ginger was never easy to be around\, as Rolling Stone journalist and filmmaker Bulger found out to his cost… \nKevin Romain is a drummer\, improviser\, composer\, educator\, bandleader and curator based in East Vancouver. Since the early 2000s he has performed regularly across North America as well as Europe\, West Africa\, China and Japan. He studied jazz and contemporary music at Vancouver Community College and has studied the drums with luminaries such as Tomas Fujiwara\, Marcus Gilmore\, Jeff Ballard\, Mark Guiliana\, Dan Weiss\, Bernie Arai and Dylan van der Schyff. \nRomain’s current focus as a bandleader and composer is his post-bop quartet Salience Network. The debut full length record from this group was released in 2023 on The Infidels Jazz record label. Over the past decade Romain has performed extensively as a soloist on the drum set. 2025 sees the release of his first solo record Autopoietic 1\, a collection of improvisations rooted in his highly personal polyrhythmic vocabulary. \nFor this performance\, Romain will be joined by longtime collaborators Cole Schmidt (guitar) and Olive Shakur (bass)\, playing repertoire from the Ginger Baker Trio\, which saw the iconic drummer team up with jazz legends Bill Frisell and Charlie Haden in the mid 1990s.

On occasion\, Shaw would tour with a smaller group\, his Gramercy Five\, which became one of the fixtures of small group swing. Come and enjoy a rare performance of this melodic and jubilant music featuring James Danderfer clarinet\, Bill Coon guitar\, Sharon Minemoto piano\, Max Huberdeau vibraphone\, Dan Howard bass and Joe Poole drums\, to be followed by a screening of Artie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got. \nArtie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got (1985\, 115 min)\nAnchored by an incisive interview with its then 72-year-old subject\, Artie Shaw: Time is All You’ve Got looks back on the five-decade career of “King of the Clarinet” Artie Shaw (1910-2004)\, one of the most popular stars of the 1930s and ’40s Swing era. Brigitte Berman’s film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1985\, and is screening in a new 4K restoration. SUMMARY:Brandon Wint: Moving For Love at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver-based poet and filmmaker Brandon Wint presents two deeply-personal short films\, each of which is propelled by poetry and jazz. In Moving For Love Brandon explores for the first time the details of his family’s migration from the Caribbean to Canada in the early 1970s. With help from his mother and grandmother\, Brandon probes the social and familial forces that prompted his family to make the difficult journeys from Barbados and Jamaica. Brandon uses these histories as a portal through which to consider his own relationships to love\, sacrifice and new beginnings\, as a poet who has sought love and belonging in Toronto\, Ottawa\, Edmonton and now Vancouver. The film is scored by Vancouver jazz luminaries Feven Kidane\, Yoro Noukoussi\, and Quincy Mayes. \nThe second short film\, Backbone is a vulnerable memoir exploring how cerebral palsy\, the visible disability with which Brandon lives\, complicates the notion and practical realities of health and self-care. The film maps Brandon’s journey toward forgiving himself\, and his family\, for the ways that his complex physicality made accessing care difficult\, bewildering and sometimes painful. This film\, too\, is propelled by a dynamic musical score which features contributions from Edmonton’s Brian Raine\, Montreal’s Theo Abellard\, and Vancouver’s Anjalica Solomon. Both films use jazz as a means of prompting vulnerability and spiritual fortitude. \nThe night will begin with a musical performance by Feven Kidane\, Yoro Noukoussi\, Quincy Mayes and Brandon Wint. SUMMARY:Ron Samworth & Melissa Hubert's Etiquette of Dying at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:“When does one begin dying?” That’s the first question posed by this poetical but direct contemplation of mortality. A unique collaboration between guitarist Ron Samworth and filmmaker Melissa Hubert\, The Etiquette of Dying came out of Ron’s experience with cancer a few years ago\, which inspired a suite\, and which in turn inspired Hubert’s 50-minute animated film. After the screening Ron and Melissa will take audience questions\, and then Ron will lead a 4-piece band in an improvised live performance featuring Peggy Lee (Cello)\, Elisa Thorn (Harp) and and Jesus Caballero (Drums). \nThe Etiquette of Dying invites audiences on a transformative audiovisual journey\, encouraging reflection on the human experience and our relationship with mortality. With evocative music and striking visuals\, the piece explores the dimensions of the dying process\, encompassing its mental\, emotional\, and physical aspects. Samworth’s composition captures the nuanced emotions of this transitional period. Through her visual direction\, Hubert evokes a sense of contemplation and contemplation in viewers. Featuring Vancouver musicians Peggy Lee\, JP Carter\, Elise Thorn\, André Lachance\, and Jesus Adrian Caballero Ramirez and narrator Patti Wotherspoon\, the suite provides a rich listening experience through various musical energies\, improvisation\, and instrumental textures.

Regular tickets will be $25. \nSixty years ago\, inspired by Jean-Luc Godard and John Cassavetes\, Gilles Groulx made a French-Canadian nouvelle vague movie in Montreal. Le chat dans le sac is a portrait of an earnest\, self-absorbed young man — a would-be revolutionary — and his exploitative relationship with a naive theatre student. To compose the score\, Groulx turned to bebop saxophonist John Coltrane… whose score was finally released in 2022 as the album Blue World. The film is a fascinating time capsule capturing Montreal in the early 60s\, the cultural currents of the time (with newspapers looming large)\, and the sexual attitudes of the period. This screening will be preceded by a live jazz concert by the Mike Allen Trio. \nMike Allen is a legendary tenor saxophonist who has been at the forefront of the Canadian Jazz scene for 30 years. Known for his work with everybody from Michael Bublé to Sonny Greenwich\, Mike is particularly adept at interpreting the music of John Coltrane.
