SUMMARY:Joel Faulkner at Frankie's After Dark
DESCRIPTION:A Toronto transplant\, Joel Faulkner is one of Vancouver’s most exciting guitarists. Since the age of 4\,and throughout his life\, Joel has been playing many different styles of music. With a background playing gospel music in church growing up followed by 10 years of performing in bars and clubs around Ontario (as a frontman and sideman for different Blues\, Funk\, Folk and Rock groups)\, Faulkner has spent the last 10 years focused on Jazz.\nThe Joel Faulkner Trio is a Vancouver based jazz group led by Joel Faulkner (Guitar)\, and accompanied by Brad Pearson (Bass)\, and Max Huberdeau (Drums). Although the threehave been playing together and friends for years\, they have recently found themselves for the second time as roommates. This will also be the first time the group has performed in this configuration\, which promises to be an exciting event! While mostly performing their take on standards from the Great American Song book\, the collective musical experience brought to the table by each musician makes for a unique sound that is equally soulful\, playful and edgy.

SUMMARY:Ron Samworth & Melissa Hubert's Etiquette of Dying at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:“When does one begin dying?” That’s the first question posed by this poetical but direct contemplation of mortality. A unique collaboration between guitarist Ron Samworth and filmmaker Melissa Hubert\, The Etiquette of Dying came out of Ron’s experience with cancer a few years ago\, which inspired a suite\, and which in turn inspired Hubert’s 50-minute animated film. After the screening Ron and Melissa will take audience questions\, and then Ron will lead a 4-piece band in an improvised live performance featuring Peggy Lee (Cello)\, Elisa Thorn (Harp) and and Jesus Caballero (Drums). \nThe Etiquette of Dying invites audiences on a transformative audiovisual journey\, encouraging reflection on the human experience and our relationship with mortality. With evocative music and striking visuals\, the piece explores the dimensions of the dying process\, encompassing its mental\, emotional\, and physical aspects. Samworth’s composition captures the nuanced emotions of this transitional period. Through her visual direction\, Hubert evokes a sense of contemplation and contemplation in viewers. Featuring Vancouver musicians Peggy Lee\, JP Carter\, Elise Thorn\, André Lachance\, and Jesus Adrian Caballero Ramirez and narrator Patti Wotherspoon\, the suite provides a rich listening experience through various musical energies\, improvisation\, and instrumental textures.
