SUMMARY:Aquiles Navarro & Tcheser Holmes at Frankie's After Dark
DESCRIPTION:Afro-Caribbean improvisational trumpet-and-percussion duo Aquiles Navarro & Tcheser Holmes\, are longtime friends\, collaborators\, devotees of New York City’s creative music scenes\, and members of celebrated free jazz collective Irreversible Entanglements. In September of 2014\, Navarro and Holmes self-released an album of improvisations that they’d recorded in Panama earlier that summer. The following spring\, they were invited to perform at The Silent Barn in Brooklyn\, an event organized by Musicians Against Police Brutality as a benefit for the family of Akai Gurley (a Black man who was killed by a NYPD officer). The duo took the stage immediately before a formalizing performance by Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother)\, Keir Neuringer and Luke Stewart\, a trio that would soon adopt the name Irreversible Entanglements\, as well as Navarro and Holmes themselves.\nIn the Fall of 2019\, Navarro and Holmes went into the studio again\, booking two after-hours sessions at Brooklyn’s S1 Studios. The resulting album – Heritage of the Invisible II – reveals Navarro and Holmes stepping firmly into the limelight of progressive music-making.\nAquiles Navarro on Trumpet & Tcheser Holmes on Drums\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. SUMMARY:Cowboy Bebop + The Cowboy Bebop Bebop Band
DESCRIPTION:Get your tickets at the early bird price of $18 before August 5. Regular tickets will be $25. \nHere’s the double whammy of the season! Fresh from their sold out shows at Tyrant Studios & Hero’s Welcome\, the Cowboy Bebop Bebop Band (led by Steven Zhu) returns\, featuring some of the hottest young Jazz musicians in Vancouver playing music from the seminal Cowboy Bebop anime. \nThis special performance will be paired with a screening of the 2001 Cowboy Bebop: The Movie. \nRJ Abella — trumpet; Gordy Li — sax; Afu Keteca — bari sax; Patrick Kao — guitar; Rick Son — keys; Piyotr Kao — bass; Steven Zhu — drums \nLive Music: 7:30 pm\nMovie: 8:45 pm \n\nThe year is 2071. Following a terrorist bombing\, a deadly virus is released on the populace of Mars and the government has issued a 300 million woo-long reward\, the largest bounty in history\, for the capture of whoever is behind it. The bounty hunter crew of the spaceship Bebop; Spike\, Faye\, Jet and Ed\, take the case with hopes of cashing in the bounty… \nKnown in Japan as Cowboy Bebop: Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door\, this visually thrilling expansion from the ever-popular anime series more than stands the test of time — in fact it feels more timely now than it did back in 2001. \nA brilliant feature-length anime that’s good enough to deserve mention in the same breath as Akira\, Ghost in the Shell\, and Spirited Away. \nJamie Russell\, BBC \nHonors the affectless beauty of the original anime art and maintains the outlaw boppiness of the series concept. \nLisa Schwarzbaum\, Entertainment Weekly \nEven with its slow-moving observations of its recreation of the modern world and its characters’ introspections about the meaning of their lives\, the film defies the idea that a feature-length episode of Cowboy Bebop would be anything less than thrilling. It simply rocks as an action movie. \nKambole Campbell\, Thrillist \nBUY TICKETS TODAY

SUMMARY:Clara Lin Trio
DESCRIPTION:Clara is a pianist and composer born in Shenzhen\, a newborn urban city in southern China. She grew up classically trained and exposed to urban music like R&B\, gospel\, Soul\, and cantonese pop. At 18\, she discovered Jazz and was drawn to music by Bill Evans\, Keith Jarrett\, and Fred Hersch as she went to the United States to study classical music. She then traveled to many places and spent most of her time digging into Jazz-related contemporary music. Clara’s music aims to tell a story that threads together all the places she had been living in that ended up in Vancouver\, her generation of displacement\, and nostalgia for a never-go-back homeland through all the musical languages that have influenced her over time.\nFor her very first Frankie’s Performance she will be joined by Dan Howard on Bass & Todd Stewart on Drums.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz.
