SUMMARY:Krystle dos Santos + Dawn Pemberton Meet Me at Vie’s + Union Street Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Meet Me At Vie’s is an upcoming musical event that celebrates the rich cultural history of Hogan’s Alley\, a vibrant black community nestled in Vancouver’s Strathcona area until 1972. \nGet Tickets\nThis musical was written and created by 2 time Western Canadian Award winner Krystle dos Santos\, also known for her previous musicals: BLAK & Hey Viola! \nOn April 4\, Krystle dos Santos & Dawn Pemberton will be giving audiences a sneak peak into Vie’s\, by performing stories featured in this musical\, and songs made famous by some of the more well-known visitors to Vie’s\, like Billie Holiday\, Nat King Cole\, Sammy Davis Jr.\, Ella Fitzgerald\, and many more. This will be followed by a screening of Union Street\, a 2023 documentary that focuses on the rich history of Vancouver’s lost cultural gem. \nAbout the Film: Union Street (Jamila Pomeroy\, 2022\, 79 min)\nInterspersing interviews with archival footage\, Union Street documents the history of Vancouver’s Hogan’s Alley\, the Black neighbourhood which was destroyed by the construction of the Georgia viaduct. This history speaks to systemic racial injustice towards Vancouver’s Black community which continues to this day. This beautifully shot portrait commemorates legacies\, but also celebrates a new generation of Black Vancouverites working to rebuild community\, reclaim cultural space\, and facilitate Black joy. \nMeet Me At Vie’s will run at Olympic Village Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre from April 23-May 2. It’s created by Krystle dos Santos\, presented by Musical TheatreWorks and directed by Tracey Powers. \n  \nCo-Presented with

We never know what they are going to play or what our responses will be. We know that it is always a conversation—a call from them and a response from us that is also a call back to them. It is harmony and dissonance colliding and colluding in both music and dance. It is exciting and adrenalin-producing enjoyment for us\, the musicians\, and our audiences.” \nGeneral $25 \nSupporter $40 \nLocated 111 West Hastings Street Vancouver. SUMMARY:I Am the Blues + Robert Connely Farr Live
DESCRIPTION:Robert Connely Farr is a songwriter from Bolton Mississippi (hometown of blues legends like Charley Patton\, Sam Chatmon\, Bo Carter & Walter Vinson) he currently resides in Vancouver\, Canada. \nGet Tickets\nSince 2017\, cherished elder Mississippi blues man Jimmy “Duck” Holmes has been mentoring Farr in the Bentonia Style of the Delta Blues. He’s also learned directly from Mississippi Bluesmen RL Boyce & Terry Harmonica Bean. In 2019 Farr was nominated for New Artist of the Year & Songwriter of the Year by Canada’s prestigious Maple Blues Awards for his album Dirty South Blues (Prod. Leeroy Stagger). \nImmediately following in 2020\, he was met with a cancer diagnosis during which he recorded and released his Country Supper\, Gasoline & Live In EastVan albums. In 2022 he released Ain’t Enough & Shake It with the Cherry Ball and Pandora Sessions following in 2023. His songs having been used on Netflix\, Lifetime & SYFY on shows like Snowpiercer\, Resident Alien & Reacher. \nFor this special performance at VIFF\, he’ll be performing classic Delta Blues songs as well as his own originals. He’ll be joined by Tyler McLeod on drums. \nAbout the Film: I Am the Blues (Daniel Cross\, Canada\, 2016) 106 min. \nA musical journey through the swamps of the Louisiana Bayou\, the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta and Moonshine soaked BBQs in the North Mississippi Hill Country. Visiting the last original blues devils\, many in their 80s\, still living in the deep south\, working without management and touring the Chitlin’ Circuit. Let Bobby Rush\, Barbara Lynn\, Henry Gray\, Carol Fran\, Lazy Lester\, Bilbo Walker\, RL Boyce\, Jimmy ’Duck’ Holmes\, Lil Buck Sinegal\, LC Ulmer and their friends awaken the blues in all of us. \nI was quietly blown away by Daniel Cross’s new documentary I Am the Blues… There is something miraculous in this patient little film\, which lends an ear to weathered old musicians\, going about their lives in the backwaters of the Louisiana Bayou and the Mississippi Delta. The director leaves ample room for the music\, and it will take your breath away. I Am the Blues seeks and finds incredible artists who have been overlooked or forgotten\, and gives them their due before they’re gone. \nT’Cha Dunlevy\, Montreal Gazette \nA lovely film\, made with a light\, respectful touch. For aficionados\, this is a must see. For those who at least like the blues\, it’s also highly recommendable. \nMarc Glassman\, POV magazine \n  \nCo-Presented with
