SUMMARY:Chungking Express + Chen Baker: Cantopop
DESCRIPTION:The first Wong Kar-Wai movie to make an impression on North American audiences (the Miramax release was sponsored by Quentin Tarantino)\, Chungking Express is a fast\, fluid\, almost throwaway picture set in contemporary Hong Kong\, and comprising two simple\, short story-like through-lines involving lovelorn policemen. \nGet Tickets\nIt was this smaller film that made Wong’s name in the West. After the studied inertia of Days of Being Wild\, Chungking is a frenetic visual blur that’s been likened to an action painting. Still the prevailing tone is wistful melancholy: even a cop’s ragged dishcloth joins in the tears. \nBefore the movie (102 minutes) Chen Baker will get us in the mood for love with their brand of Canto pop. Chen Baker is a group of seasoned musicians who frequently present jazz-influenced interpretations of Asian pop music\, including mandopop and Japanese city pop. On July 12\, they’ll be returning to VIFF\, pairing their performance with a screening of Chungking Express. To complement the film\, they will be covering and reimagining Cantonese pop music from the 80s to early 2000s\, in addition to songs from the Chungking Express soundtrack. Alvin Fung (vocals\, guitar) Jeffery Chen (guitar) Brittany Or (keyboard) Alex Cheng (bass) Dario Acosta (drums) \nChen Baker: 7:00 pm\nChungking Express: 8:15 pm approx (102 min) \nThis is what Godard movies were once like: fast\, hand-held\, funny and very\, very catchy. \nTony Rayns\, Time Out \nWong Kar-Wai’s Chungking Express is as fresh as falling rain\, a pair of love stories full of pain and humor. \nKevin Thomas\, LA Times \nChungking Express gets by and gets off on sheer innocence\, exuberance\, and cinematic freedom\, a striking triumph of style over substance that give life to the grunge and chaos at the heart of contemporary Hong Kong. \nJoshua Klein\, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die \n  \nCo-Presented with

SUMMARY:John Pizzarelli Presents "Dear Mr. Bennett”
DESCRIPTION:With more than 30 albums to his credit\, Pizzarelli remains a towering figure in jazz\, celebrated for his masterful guitar work\, relaxed vocal charm\, and his ability to bridge the gap between classic jazz\, swing\, and modern pop. As a master of the Great American Songbook\, he is often compared to Nat King Cole. \nGet Tickets\nWhile Pizzarelli has been hailed for reinvigorating the Songbook\, he has also expanded the repertoire. Known for “jazzifying” pop songs\, his setlists include the music of Paul McCartney\, Joni Mitchell\, Neil Young\, Tom Waits\, Antônio Carlos Jobim and the Beatles. \nHe is recognized as one of the most talented guitarists in mainstream jazz today\, often blending rapid\, clean guitar lines with scat singing in a manner reminiscent of George Benson. \nIn addition to being a bandleader and solo performer\, Pizzarelli has been a special guest on recordings for such stars as Natalie Cole and Rickie Lee Jones\, as well as leading jazz artists such as Rosemary Clooney\, Buddy DeFranco and\, of course\, his father Bucky Pizzarelli. \nPizzarelli’s latest album celebrates the centennial of iconic singer Tony Bennett. Dear Mr. Bennett features Pizzarelli’s trio with bassist Mike Karn and pianist Isaiah J. Thompson performing timeless songs made famous by Bennett – favourites of which will be highlighted at this concert. \nThis special event is co-presented with Infidels Jazz and Modo Live. \nSorry\, no discounted tickets available.\nStandard pricing applies. \nThursday\, September 10\, 2026 | 7:30 PM

SUMMARY:PAT METHENY -- Side-Eye III+ -- Ottawa
DESCRIPTION:Pat Metheny\, born August 12\, 1954\, in Lee’s Summit\, Missouri\, has stood at the forefront of modern music for more than five decades. \nGet Tickets\nBeginning on trumpet at age eight and switching to guitar at twelve\, Metheny was performing with Kansas City’s top jazz musicians by fifteen—an early start that helped shape his unmistakable sound. \nAfter joining vibraphonist Gary Burton’s group in 1974\, Metheny’s horn-like phrasing\, lyrical touch\, and rhythmic fluidity quickly distinguished him. His debut album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, redefined the possibilities of jazz guitar\, introducing a new sonic openness and melodic clarity that inspired generations of players. \nWith more than 20 million albums sold and 20 Grammy Awards in ten different categories—a record unmatched by any other artist—Metheny’s influence extends across genres and generations. \nHis collaborations span from Steve Reich and Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock\, Jim Hall\, Milton Nascimento\, and David Bowie. His compositions encompass everything from solo guitar works and orchestral pieces to the groundbreaking Orchestrion project. \nA dedicated educator\, Metheny became the youngest instructor in the history of both the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music\, where he later received an honorary doctorate. He is a member of the DownBeat Hall of Fame\, a NEA Jazz Master\, and an inductee of both the Royal Swedish Academy of Music and the Missouri Hall of Fame. \nIn 2026\, Metheny will embark on a world tour with his new ensemble Side-Eye III+\, supporting the release of their self-titled album—the first on his new label\, Uniquity Music\, which will encompass all of his recordings since 1984 and all future projects. \n— \n\nPresale: ACT pre-sale: Thursday\, May 28th\, 2026 at 10 AM to 10 PM (PW: ACT26)General On Sale: Friday\, May 29th\, 2026 at 10 AM\nCost: $99.50 to $$159.50 (plus applicable fees)Detail: https://www.algonquinsa.com/event/pat-metheny-side-eye-iii\nAll ages event. SUMMARY:Julian Lage Quartet at the Chan Centre
DESCRIPTION:feat. John Medeski\, Jorge Roeder & Kenny Wollesen\nGet Tickets\nHailed as one of the most gifted guitarists of his generation and “one of the highest category of improvising musicians\,” (The New Yorker) Julian Lage has spent decades exploring the many strains of American music with boundless curiosity and technical mastery. With roots tangled up in jazz\, folk\, classical\, and country music\, Lage brings what The New York Times calls “a disarming spirit of generosity” to his playing\, approaching tradition as an open field for invention. \nA lifelong musician\, Lage emerged early as a singular talent. He learned the guitar at age five and was already playing onstage with Carlos Santana at eight. That same year\, he was the subject of the short documentary Jules at Eight\, showcasing his prodigious talents\, performed for the Grammy Awards as a preteen\, and later joined Gary Burton’s quartet at just 16. Rather than resting on early acclaim\, Lage has continually evolved\, recording widely as a leader and collaborating with artists including John Zorn\, Fred Hersch\, Nels Cline\, and Chris Eldridge. \nFor this concert\, he performs music from his newest album Scenes from Above\, with bassist Jorge Roeder\, drummer Kenny Wollesen\, and renowned keyboardist John Medeski. Though conceptualized by Lage\, Scenes from Above is not about him as bandleader. Instead\, he is firmly rooted as a band member within the quartet\, resulting in nine tracks that frame a brilliantly open experience. The four dazzling players give and take space in equal measure as they explore these songs in one space\, in real time. \nWitness the genius of Julian Lage live in Vancouver for an unforgettable experience. \nThis event is co-presented with Infidels Jazz as part of the VANJAZZ ’26 Jazz Festival
