As a master of the Great American Songbook\, he is often compared to Nat King Cole. \nGet Tickets\nWhile Pizzarelli has been hailed for reinvigorating the Songbook\, he has also expanded the repertoire. Known for “jazzifying” pop songs\, his setlists include the music of Paul McCartney\, Joni Mitchell\, Neil Young\, Tom Waits\, Antônio Carlos Jobim and the Beatles. \nHe is recognized as one of the most talented guitarists in mainstream jazz today\, often blending rapid\, clean guitar lines with scat singing in a manner reminiscent of George Benson. \nIn addition to being a bandleader and solo performer\, Pizzarelli has been a special guest on recordings for such stars as Natalie Cole and Rickie Lee Jones\, as well as leading jazz artists such as Rosemary Clooney\, Buddy DeFranco and\, of course\, his father Bucky Pizzarelli. \nPizzarelli’s latest album celebrates the centennial of iconic singer Tony Bennett. DESCRIPTION:Pat Metheny\, born August 12\, 1954\, in Lee’s Summit\, Missouri\, has stood at the forefront of modern music for more than five decades. \nGet Tickets\nBeginning on trumpet at age eight and switching to guitar at twelve\, Metheny was performing with Kansas City’s top jazz musicians by fifteen—an early start that helped shape his unmistakable sound. \nAfter joining vibraphonist Gary Burton’s group in 1974\, Metheny’s horn-like phrasing\, lyrical touch\, and rhythmic fluidity quickly distinguished him. His debut album\, Bright Size Life (1975)\, redefined the possibilities of jazz guitar\, introducing a new sonic openness and melodic clarity that inspired generations of players. \nWith more than 20 million albums sold and 20 Grammy Awards in ten different categories—a record unmatched by any other artist—Metheny’s influence extends across genres and generations. \nHis collaborations span from Steve Reich and Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock\, Jim Hall\, Milton Nascimento\, and David Bowie. His compositions encompass everything from solo guitar works and orchestral pieces to the groundbreaking Orchestrion project. \nA dedicated educator\, Metheny became the youngest instructor in the history of both the University of Miami and Berklee College of Music\, where he later received an honorary doctorate. John Medeski\, Jorge Roeder & Kenny Wollesen\nGet Tickets\nHailed as one of the most gifted guitarists of his generation and “one of the highest category of improvising musicians\,” (The New Yorker) Julian Lage has spent decades exploring the many strains of American music with boundless curiosity and technical mastery. With roots tangled up in jazz\, folk\, classical\, and country music\, Lage brings what The New York Times calls “a disarming spirit of generosity” to his playing\, approaching tradition as an open field for invention. \nA lifelong musician\, Lage emerged early as a singular talent. He learned the guitar at age five and was already playing onstage with Carlos Santana at eight. That same year\, he was the subject of the short documentary Jules at Eight\, showcasing his prodigious talents\, performed for the Grammy Awards as a preteen\, and later joined Gary Burton’s quartet at just 16. Rather than resting on early acclaim\, Lage has continually evolved\, recording widely as a leader and collaborating with artists including John Zorn\, Fred Hersch\, Nels Cline\, and Chris Eldridge. \nFor this concert\, he performs music from his newest album Scenes from Above\, with bassist Jorge Roeder\, drummer Kenny Wollesen\, and renowned keyboardist John Medeski. Though conceptualized by Lage\, Scenes from Above is not about him as bandleader. Instead\, he is firmly rooted as a band member within the quartet\, resulting in nine tracks that frame a brilliantly open experience.
