SUMMARY:George Garzone + Fire Music at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Early bird tickets are available now! There are a limited number of early bird tickets available\, so don’t wait! \nGet Tickets\nGeorge Garzone is a giant of the contemporary saxophone\, having performed with Jazz luminaries like Joe Lovano\, Jack DeJohnette\, Kenny Barron\, & Ingrid Jensen\, and having recorded over a dozen albums as a leader since the 1990s. In short\, he’s considered one of the true living masters of this instrument. He’ll be performing a very special set music at the VIFF Centre\, in tandem with a screening of Fire Music\, documenting the birth and growing pain of Free Jazz in the 1960s & 1970s. This music is near and dear to George’s heart and to celebrate it\, he’s enlisted one of the Pacific Northwest’s most explosive Jazz groups to perform with him\, the Jerry Steinhilber Trio. \nGeorge Garzone – Tenor Saxophone\nJosh Cook – Tenor Saxophone\nKing Dahl – Bass\nJerry Steinhilber – Drums \nAbout Fire Music (Tom Surgal\, 2021\, USA\, 84 min) \nThe most reviled and misunderstood evolution in the (repeatedly reviled and misunderstood) history of jazz\, Free Jazz took bebop as a key to unlock deeper mysteries of musical harmonics\, a transcendent art pioneered by John Coltrane\, Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor. You may think you don’t like improvisational jazz… but this is the film to open your ears to a spiritual quest analogous to abstract expressionism in painting\, or beat poetry in literature.

SUMMARY:(Advance tickets SOLD OUT) Köln 75 + Chris Gestrin at VIFF: Vancouver Playhouse
DESCRIPTION:Experience the transcendent power of improvised music for a special VIFF Live concert and film screening. \nAdvance tickets SOLD OUT. \nLearn More\nRenowned Vancouver pianist Chris Gestrin performs a solo set of Keith Jarrett–inspired music to accompany this special event screening of Köln 75 — a film that captures the compelling\, entertaining\, and\, until now\, unknown back story of jazz pianist Keith Jarrett’s one-hour\, entirely improvised concert\, which became the best-selling solo album in jazz history. \nChris Gestrin is a stalwart of Vancouver’s jazz scene — a renowned pianist\, multi-keyboardist\, composer\, engineer\, and producer who has worked on over 500 albums covering a wide range of musical styles. From avant garde electronic improvisations to greasy soul organ music\, introspective piano jazz to top-of-the-charts pop\, rock\, and hip-hop\, Gestrin is in high demand for his eclectic talents and ability to bring a high level of musical inspiration to any situation. \nKeith Jarrett’s legendary performance in January 1975 nearly didn’t happen. Based on a true story\, Köln 75 explores how the concert was conceived and orchestrated by the efforts of an up-and-coming teenage concert promoter\, Vera Brandes (played by Mala Emde). Vera’s enthusiasm led her to multitasking — from organizing the Cologne Opera House as the concert venue\, to promoting the event\, selling the tickets\, and convincing Jarrett to perform when he almost dropped after the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand piano he was promised was nowhere to be found. John Magaro plays Jarrett with his own intensity\, a sublime counterpoint to Emde’s joyful portrayal of the enthusiastic and unstoppable Vera. Köln 75 captures the compelling\, entertaining\, and\, until now\, unknown back story of Jarrett’s one-hour\, entirely improvised concert\, which became the best-selling solo album in jazz history.

SUMMARY:Rachael & Vilray at the Hollywood Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn-based duo Rachael & Vilray have achieved a timeless quality with their singular take on traditional pop. \nGet Tickets\nThough rooted in the language of an earlier age\, their songs transcend nostalgia with wit and a flair for the theatrical. On their third album West of Broadway\, vocalist Rachael Price (also of Lake Street Dive) and guitarist/singer/songwriter Vilray evolve their music’s previous dreaminess to achieve a refreshing angularity built on left-of-center instrumentation (e.g.\, vibraphone and alto saxophone coasting above the moody strains of baritone sax and trombone). Produced by Dan Knobler (Allison Russell\, Bahamas)\, West of Broadway unfolds in a series of sharply drawn vignettes inspired by a recent fascination with classic musicals—bringing their luminous vocals to offbeat tales of love and heartache along city streets. \nRecorded at the legendary Sear Sound in Manhattan\, West of Broadway took shape with the help of renowned musicians like saxophonist Steve Wilson (a former member of Chick Corea’s Origin sextet) and drummer John Riley (Miles Davis\, Dizzy Gillespie). Over the course of 10 lush and effervescent tracks\, the album delivers standouts like “Love Comes Around” (a joyously romantic piece that set the direction for the LP’s West Coast jazz-inspired aesthetic)\, “My Key to Gramercy Park” (a fantastically salty number narrated by a well-to-do character who lives in lonely suspicion of all those who covet their key to the notoriously exclusive private park)\, and “Off Broadway” (on which golden-voiced comedian Stephen Colbert joins in for what the duo dubs an “oddly grumpy anti-Broadway screed”). Thanks in large part to the colorful detail and extravagant personality of Rachael & Vilray’s storytelling\, West of Broadway ultimately immerses the audience in an exquisitely out-of-time vision of their beloved New York City. \nMODO-LIVE\, Infidels Jazz present… \nRachael & Vilray \nw/ Special Guests \nMonday October 20th\, 2025 \nHollywood \nVancouver\, BC
