SUMMARY:James Danderfer Sextet: A Tribute to Artie Shaw at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:One of the most popular and intriguing big band leaders of the Swing era\, Artie Shaw took jazz clarinet to a new level of artistry and celebrity. On occasion\, Shaw would tour with a smaller group\, his Gramercy Five\, which became one of the fixtures of small group swing. Come and enjoy a rare performance of this melodic and jubilant music featuring James Danderfer clarinet\, Bill Coon guitar\, Sharon Minemoto piano\, Max Huberdeau vibraphone\, Dan Howard bass and Joe Poole drums\, to be followed by a screening of Artie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got. \nArtie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got (1985\, 115 min)\nAnchored by an incisive interview with its then 72-year-old subject\, Artie Shaw: Time is All You’ve Got looks back on the five-decade career of “King of the Clarinet” Artie Shaw (1910-2004)\, one of the most popular stars of the 1930s and ’40s Swing era. Brigitte Berman’s film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1985\, and is screening in a new 4K restoration. Featuring: Artie Shaw\, Polly Haynes\, John Wexley\, Lee Castle\, John Best\, Helen Forrest\, Buddy Rich\, Mel Tormé. \nIn an era of separate white and Black bands\, Shaw broke the color barrier by hiring legendary African American musicians like Billie Holiday\, Hot Lips Page and Roy Eldridge for his bands. Shaw’s restlessness and intellectual curiosity (he’d author four books of fiction and non-fiction) led him to shun celebrity and retire from show business in the late 1940s\, with only occasional comebacks after. Known also as a ladies’ man\, Shaw’s eight wives included actresses Ava Gardner\, Lana Turner\, Doris Dowling\, Evelyn Keyes\, and novelist Kathleen Winsor\, author of the notoriously racy bestseller Forever Amber.

SUMMARY:Nick Leffler Quartet at Frankie's After Dark
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 2023\, Alex Marr\, Andrew Skepasts\, Dan Howard\, and Nick Leffler began jamming together as a way to push each other and stay in shape. Just a few short months later they had coalesced into the Nick Leffler Quartet and found themselves in the studio laying down their debut album\, Baby Steps\, which would release in early 2024. Heavily influenced by John Coltrane\, his cohort\, and their disciples\, they focus on heavy improvisation with an emphasis on harmonic exploration. Forming the core of the repertoire\, Leffler’s compositions leave space for the musicians to stretch out and bring their unique voices to bear.\nLook forward to a night of exploration and expression in this can’t-miss performance.\nThis performance is a part of Jazz Feeds Vancouver\, and part of the proceeds from this concert will be donated to the Vancouver Food Bank.\nFrankie’s After Dark takes place every Friday and Saturday at Frankie’s Jazz Club in downtown Vancouver and is curated by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. Shows start at 11:00PM and tickets are $10.

SUMMARY:Kuyatet / Manila In The Claws of Light at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the spotlight on Filipino director Lino Brocka\, we are pairing his best known film with jazz interpretations of Filipino music led by Victor Noriega\, with his band Kuyatet (“Kuya” means “Brother” in Tagalog). \nBrocka (1939-1991) directed over 50 films until his untimely death\, many of them comic book soap operas (in his own words) firmly in the commercial mainstream of the busy local industry. But he interspersed these production line assignments with fiercely political social realist films which found international acclaim\, and which irked the Marcos dictatorship. Manila in the Claws of Light (also\, confusingly\, known as Manila in the Claws of Darkness and Manilla in the Claws of Neon) is regarded as the greatest Philippine movie ever made. It’s the story of a fisherman\, Julio\, who comes to the big city in the footsteps of his fiancee\, who has gone missing. His experiences expose the exploitation and corruption at the heart of the country. \nBefore the film screens\, enjoy an hour long set from Kuyatet comprising folk melodies\, classics from Filipino composers and new originals inspired by the genre. A veritable plethora of possibilities for re-imagined and adventurous interpretations. Victor Noriega’s first foray into this concept materialized in his 2006 award-winning piano trio release\, “Alay.” \nVictor Noriega – Bandleader/Keyboards\nTristan Paxton – Guitar\nDan Howard – Bass\nJoe Poole – Drums \nAward-winning composer/keyboardist Victor Noriega has been described as having “the sensitivity of Bill Evans\, the propulsion of Horace Silver and the experimentation of Thelonious Monk\,” while his compositions have been characterized as “layered\, complex\, interesting and rhythmic\,” “introspective at times\, energetic and boundary-stretching at others… seamlessly blend[ing] jazz and modern classical inflences.” His most recent recording with studio project Pontius Pilots entitled “Horizons” was released in the Fall of 2020 and features saxophonist Jeremy Udden in an expression of synthesized tones and sonic blends. \nNote: Total running time includes a 20-minute intermission between the music and the film
