DESCRIPTION:A fierce talent on the local jazz scene\, trumpeter Feven Kidane presents a very special set of original music inspired by the documentary Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat… music which seeks to connect with the film and embody a learning spirit\, remembrance\, and decades-old shared grief. \nFeven explains\, “this film gives me mixed feelings. not mixed as in “i’m half in”\, but mixed in the fact that the content itself is so emotional that my horn will have to work extra hard. mixed in the fact that its honesty hurts me. this film has me enraged\, inspired\, and activated. it gives me hope for a united Blackness\, but upset by constant thwarted plans for its achievement.” \nFor this occasion\, Feven’s band consists of Quincy Mayes on keys\, Bernie Arai on drums\, and Milo Johnson on bass. \nAbout Soundtrack to a Coup d’Etat:\nArtfully juxtaposing archival news reports\, investigative interviews\, and jazz\, Johan Grimonprez’s essay film takes a fresh look at the notorious events in the wake of Congo’s independence in the early 1960s\, culminating in the assassination of the country’s first democratically-elected leader\, Patrice Lumumba. It’s a film about the deceit at the heart of colonialism\, and about how jazz (Louis Armstrong\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Max Roach) figured into the politics of the Cold War and Black Liberation.

SUMMARY:Brad Pearson Trio at Frankie’s After Dark
DESCRIPTION:Brad Pearson has performing professionally on the Vancouver music scene since 2016 when he graduated with a bachelors of applied music from Vancouver Community College; studying classical double bass with Laurence Mollerup\, and electric bass with Cameron Hood. He has performed with local legends Hugh Fraser\, Campbell Ryga\, Brad Turner\, and Buff Allen. This bassist is best known for his associations with saxophone great John Gross\, as well as the rapidly ascending piano virtuoso Jimi James Fraser. Brad has developed his sound from a wide range of influences; both his improvisations and compositions are informed by jazz titans such as McCoy Tyner\, Dexter Gordon\, John Coltrane\, Bill Evans as well as contemporary bassists such as Renaud Garcia-Fons\, Janek Gwizdala\, Mathew Garrison\, and Damien Erskine. The bassists sound and approach was also largely shaped by his pre-academic years playing blues music with Delta Blue\, Metal with GFAP\, and progressive rock with Grizzly Bones. When not performing\, Brad runs Pearson Instruments\, a busy Vancouver guitar repair shop. He also designs and builds his own electric basses which he performs on exclusively when not playing acoustic bass. \nFor this Frankie’s After Dark performance\, Brad will be joined by guitarist Joel Faulkner\, and drummer Jamison Ko\, playing electric renditions of classic jazz standards\, fusion\, and original compositions.

DESCRIPTION:Infidels Jazz is proud to continue our new bi-weekly Jazz jam session which will take place Hero’s Welcome at 3917 Main Street\, two Sundays a month at 2PM. In November they will be held on November 10 & 24 and they’ll be hosted by Bernie Arai.\nBernie has been one of the most in demand drummers on the Vancouver scene for almost 30 years. Backing him up for these jams will be Daryl Jahnke on guitar\, and Conrad Good on bass.These will be open jam sessions\, which means that everybody from professionals to high school students will be welcome. Helping us in making sure that the jam is accessible to those younger members of our community will be the Fraser MacPherson Jazz Fund\, who has signed on as a sponsor of the Jams. If you’re under the age of 19\, just make sure you have a guardian of legal age with you. Born in Chicago and raised in Vancouver\, Harrison is also an accomplished rock performer and songwriter. He has performed his original rock at festivals including Lollapalooza\, Milwaukee Summerfest\, Zentsura AT in Bilbao\, Spain\, The West Vancouver Harmony Arts Festival and more. Harrison is excited to bring his trio featuring Jason de Couto on organ and Wes Anderson on drums to Frankie’s Jazz Club.

DESCRIPTION:In 1978 guitarist Lenny Breau and pedal steel guitarist Buddy Emmons teamed up to recorded an album entitled Minors Aloud. Recorded in Nashville\, the album became a hard-to-find classic and a must-listen for guitarists of any kind. SUMMARY:Brandon Wint: Moving For Love at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver-based poet and filmmaker Brandon Wint presents two deeply-personal short films\, each of which is propelled by poetry and jazz. In Moving For Love Brandon explores for the first time the details of his family’s migration from the Caribbean to Canada in the early 1970s. With help from his mother and grandmother\, Brandon probes the social and familial forces that prompted his family to make the difficult journeys from Barbados and Jamaica. Brandon uses these histories as a portal through which to consider his own relationships to love\, sacrifice and new beginnings\, as a poet who has sought love and belonging in Toronto\, Ottawa\, Edmonton and now Vancouver. The film is scored by Vancouver jazz luminaries Feven Kidane\, Yoro Noukoussi\, and Quincy Mayes. \nThe second short film\, Backbone is a vulnerable memoir exploring how cerebral palsy\, the visible disability with which Brandon lives\, complicates the notion and practical realities of health and self-care. The film maps Brandon’s journey toward forgiving himself\, and his family\, for the ways that his complex physicality made accessing care difficult\, bewildering and sometimes painful. This film\, too\, is propelled by a dynamic musical score which features contributions from Edmonton’s Brian Raine\, Montreal’s Theo Abellard\, and Vancouver’s Anjalica Solomon. Both films use jazz as a means of prompting vulnerability and spiritual fortitude. \nThe night will begin with a musical performance by Feven Kidane\, Yoro Noukoussi\, Quincy Mayes and Brandon Wint. On occasion\, Shaw would tour with a smaller group\, his Gramercy Five\, which became one of the fixtures of small group swing. Come and enjoy a rare performance of this melodic and jubilant music featuring James Danderfer clarinet\, Bill Coon guitar\, Sharon Minemoto piano\, Max Huberdeau vibraphone\, Dan Howard bass and Joe Poole drums\, to be followed by a screening of Artie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got. \nArtie Shaw: Time Is All You’ve Got (1985\, 115 min)\nAnchored by an incisive interview with its then 72-year-old subject\, Artie Shaw: Time is All You’ve Got looks back on the five-decade career of “King of the Clarinet” Artie Shaw (1910-2004)\, one of the most popular stars of the 1930s and ’40s Swing era. Brigitte Berman’s film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary in 1985\, and is screening in a new 4K restoration. Featuring: Artie Shaw\, Polly Haynes\, John Wexley\, Lee Castle\, John Best\, Helen Forrest\, Buddy Rich\, Mel Tormé. \nIn an era of separate white and Black bands\, Shaw broke the color barrier by hiring legendary African American musicians like Billie Holiday\, Hot Lips Page and Roy Eldridge for his bands. Shaw’s restlessness and intellectual curiosity (he’d author four books of fiction and non-fiction) led him to shun celebrity and retire from show business in the late 1940s\, with only occasional comebacks after. Heavily influenced by John Coltrane\, his cohort\, and their disciples\, they focus on heavy improvisation with an emphasis on harmonic exploration. Roland has spent most of his professional career in Hungary\, he has been a sought-after pianist and keyboardist in the vibrant music scene of Budapest. He shared the stage with some of the finest Hungarian and international jazz artists such as Peter Szendofi\, Attila Laszlo\, Budapest Jazz Orchestra\, Gabor Winand\, and Rob van de Wouw.\nAfter relocating to Canada\, he quickly became well known in the Ottawa jazz scene where he has performed and worked with Canadian and American jazz greats such as Roddy Elias\, Vinx\, Derrick Gardner\, Don Braden\, Adrian Vedady\, Nick Fraser\, Mike Essoudry\, and Arturo Stable.\nRoland is a multi-genre player\, and his broad musical background truly reflects in his playing and compositions.
