DESCRIPTION:Infidels Jazz is proud to continue our new bi-weekly Jazz jam session which will take place Hero’s Welcome at 3917 Main Street\, two Sundays a month at 2PM. In November they will be held on November 10 & 24 and they’ll be hosted by Bernie Arai.\nBernie has been one of the most in demand drummers on the Vancouver scene for almost 30 years. Backing him up for these jams will be Daryl Jahnke on guitar\, and Conrad Good on bass. These will be open jam sessions\, which means that everybody from professionals to high school students will be welcome. Helping us in making sure that the jam is accessible to those younger members of our community will be the Fraser MacPherson Jazz Fund\, who has signed on as a sponsor of the Jams. If you’re under the age of 19\, just make sure you have a guardian of legal age with you. You can use the instruments of the house band\, but please be respectful of them.\nSundays at Hero’s Welcome (3917 Main Street) is a bi-weekly jazz series presented by Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz. The concept is to provide an affordable way for jazz lovers of all ages to gather and celebrate this music we love.\nAdmission for the jam sessions are only $5 and they start at 2PM.

SUMMARY:Vince Mai Plays Chet Baker + Let's Get Lost at VIFF Centre
DESCRIPTION:A set of smooth\, sublime\, and smoky jazz from trumpeter Vince Mai backed up by a stellar band with Steve Maddock on vocals. The set will feature many beloved Chet Baker standards and more in the same vein\, followed by the first local screening of Bruce Weber’s documentary about Baker\, one of essential films about jazz. \nMiles Black: Keys\nLaurence Mollerup: Upright bass\nBernie Arai: Drums\nSteve Maddock: Vocals\nVince Mai: Trumpet \nAbout Let’s Get Lost (Bruce Weber\, 1988\, 120 min) \nWith his languid\, cool horn and broken hearted vocal stylings Chet Baker became an icon in the 1950s (it didn’t hurt that he looked like Jimmy Dean). Years of drug addiction hampered his career and hinted at underlying issues\, but he continued to sing and play with haunting delicacy. Photographer Bruce Weber documented his last tour in the 1980s. One of the essential jazz films\, this is achingly tender\, steeped in beautiful music and black and white photography; a love letter to a lost soul. \nThe finest jazz movie ever made. Empire Magazine \nA gorgeous gravestone for the Beat Generation’s legacy of beautiful-loser chic. Jim Ridley\, The Village Voice
